My remit on Kimberly-Clark was to engineer the company’s leap from old-school manufacturer to new-age marketer. Fortunately, I was able to partner with a progressive CMO and talented business leads who believed in the power of creativity and innovation. Over my 7-year stint, our progressive approach yielded better ideas, stronger teams, and most importantly share growth.

The Richards Group brought me back for my second tour in order to bring a more entrepreneurial mindset to the agency and some of its key clients. Leveraging my startup experience, I evolved the strategic approach on a number of well-established brands. I also pitched 21 new accounts and won 17 of them. And while I'll take the 81% conversion rate, it's not a life experience I'd recommend.

At the age of 26, I had the opportunity to become one of the first employees of a startup creative boutique. There was no job security and not much of a business plan other than to do good work. But we had a paying client and the existing team was strong. After nine years, we were one of the largest and most respected creative boutiques in the country. And to this day, joining Square One was one of the best decisions of my career.

During my first tour at The Richards Group, I made the leap from Account Supervisor to a member of the Strategy team. The Richards Group was an independent agency that ran very lean, so you were expected to do it all. But that also meant that I was being exposed to a lot more of the business than many of my peers at other agencies. Through these challenges and opportunities I began to see that the power of creativity could take many forms–some traditional and many that were not.

My initial foray into advertising was spent working on a national telecom client. I mined a database of millions of people on a weekly basis, and I even wrote a white paper on whether the internet would be an opportunity for brands. I consider it my early introduction to Big Data. And just to be clear, I concluded that the internet was indeed an opportunity.
