Over the course of his six years as VICE's CTO/CIO, Jesse created the Engineering, Dev Ops, Product, IT and Security departments. He also oversaw the creation of VICE's internal CMS/platform, the Vice Media Platform, which was an international first, multi-vertical platform for deploying VICE brands (14+) to all locales (50+) and which helped enable a 20X increase in traffic between 2012-2015. • Built and oversaw eight teams across three countries, including product, engineering, dev ops, infosec, IT, dev ops, data engineering and information systems. • As VICE expanded into 50+ countries, adding two new lines of business (News and TV) and on the heels of major investments from Disney, TCV and A&E, Jesse spearheaded a business systems transformation and the creation of the Information Systems department, eventually encompassing PMO, Data Engineering, and Application Management. The transformation included the global implementation of a new ERP (Netsuite), new CRM (Salesforce), new HCM (Workday), as well as a Business Intelligence platform (data warehouse with 30+ sources). • Oversaw budget for all technology spending at VICE worldwide • Launched more than 20 sites for VICE clients including Intel, HBO, EA, and Dell • Supervised the response to nation-state DDoS attacks and setup effective counter-measures alongside Mandiant to reduce risk. Coordinated with the FBI to combat phishing/hacking attacks from the Syrian Electronic Army. • Oversaw the Media Asset Management system, DAM, Video Library, Video Management System (distribution), Resource Management System, and Rights Management Systems. • Worked on technical integration for the M&A of the Carrot Creative agency. • Oversaw the creation of an internal data management system that monitored financial, analytics, CRM and video data. • Introduced the idea of a ‘Frequency Determined Responsive User-Experience’ that adapts a site to a user based on how familiar they are with the site.
Jesse founded Solid Sender, a Web Development firm, in 1998. The company did not advertise its services, but grew entirely through client referrals. The company did the wing-to-wing development on all projects, including engineering, design, and dev ops. Clients included VICE, Strategic Agency, author and former CEO of Publicis Bob Bloom, Noble & Wickersham LLP, Lewis & Kaplan LLP, WPI Advertising, HVW8 Design, and C1RCA Footwear. In 2001 Solid Sender was contracted by VICE to build and manage their first site, viceland.com, which would eventually become vice.com. In 2005, with VICE co-founder Suroosh Alvi and Chief Creative Officer Eddy Moretti, Jesse helped build a prototype of a then-novel concept: an online video site. The idea eventually became VBS.TV, a joint-venture with Viacom, which paved the way for a video-focused digital growth strategy at VICE that was years ahead of it's competition. • Launched VBS.TV in 2007 and oversaw development work by Code & Theory • Version 2.0 of VBS.TV launched in 2008; Solid Sender took over engineering for the site. • Built and maintained Viceland.com – the home of VICE Magazine - from 2001 to 2011 when it was merged into vice.com. Responsible for all front and back-end coding.
