Compliance is a mixture of legal, scientific, and engineering disciplines that when applied correctly helps companies cut through the noise and safely navigate the regulations. In other words, there is an art to it.My journey in compliance started at the very bottom as a regulatory coordinator for a network marketing company who wanted to legalize every product we had in every viable market, all at the same time. Never mind any training—the mantra has always been “figure it out!” And so, off into the deep end I was tossed to read regulations, modify labels and claims, and review and submit documentation to regulatory authorities. Strangely, I found compliance incredibly engaging. During the next two decades, I devoured the regulations, reading everything I could for every question or challenge that came my way. I broadened and honed my skill set in regulatory, quality, international product registration, and ingredient compliance for companies of all sizes with multiple product categories: functional foods, dietary supplements, (OTC) cosmetics, ingredients, pet foods, coffee, homeopathy, sports nutrition, packaging, juices & beverages, FIFRA pesticides, household cleaners, diapers, and wipes. Navigating compliance in so many different categories for so many companies in so many markets indeed set me apart from other compliance professionals and galvanized my expertise. And so, one of my greatest achievements in compliance came from my colleagues one day who suddenly dubbed me The Regulatory Unicorn.
