Designed and tracked progress for several programs at DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office, with a focus on synthetic biology, biological materials, and microbiome characterization and engineering. I tracked the progress of teams with total aggregate budgets in the tens of millions of dollars, and helped design and launch programs totaling >$150M in new federal funding.Duties included development of new program concepts and materials, proposal review, and project management for programs after kickoff, to ensure timely delivery of milestone accomplishments. Key programs that I worked on included Engineered Living Materials, Friend or Foe, Biological Control, BRICS, BETR, ReSource, and ReVector.

As part of the ~10-person R&D team of scientists who invented the Beyond Burger, I led a group of researchers developing texture analysis methods, prototyping new plant-based food products, and performing exploratory research into the isolation and use of soluble, natively folded plant proteins as binding agents.

I established the automation lab at Bolt and developed high-throughput methods for studying silk production and biophysical characteristics, to help boost productivity and improve purification process development.I also initiated and ran a regular seminar series for two years. Speakers included outside experts on recombinant protein production, sustainability in the textile industry, and internal presentations on business and scientific topics.

I used laser tweezers to study how a protein's topology (i.e. how its different regions are connected to each other) defines its material properties.During the course of this work, I developed a program in Matlab that was adopted for data analysis by several labs in the same field.Other research projects included modeling of Hepatitis C transmission in injection drug users and graphical user interface design in Matlab for a portable medical microscopy device called the CellScope.
