Talent RISE is the not-for-profit foundation of Talent, born out of a desire to facilitate real world solutions to the youth unemployment crisis. Our Aotearoa (New Zealand) team was launched in 2018, in response to the staggering number of rangatahi (young people) who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). Our kaupapa (purpose) is to empower rangatahi to reach their full potential. We do this by delivering our skills strength-based Readiness to Work Programme (Rangatahi Mahere Whakapakari Mahi) utilising Te Kotahitanga - The Effective Teaching Profile. This creates opportunities for our rangatahi to actively participate and engage in their learning and in turn this promotes positive youth development outcomes. Our programme is built around the Employability Skills Framework (Ministry of Education), alongside health and wellbeing, financial literacy, dress assistance and CV and Interview mentoring. When our rangatahi graduate, we focus on bridging the gap between unemployment and employment. Following this, we transition our graduates into our pastoral care phase which provides additional and ongoing support/mentoring.
  • Newtown Primary School
    Teaching Assistant/Kaiāwhina Kaiako
Newtown Primary School Feb 2020 - May 2021
    Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand
I started working at Newtown Primary School whilst studying for my Certificate in Youth Development at PRAXIS NZ. I am a firm believer in giving back to ones community and was grateful to have the opportunity of working at my old primary school. My role here included, but was not only limited to; 1 on 1 assistance with learning, supporting school projects and facilitating class exercises. At the end of 2020 I was offered the role of working in the schools brand new bilingual (Maori and English) classes as well as their total immersion (Maori) class. Throughout my time at Newtown I was also asked to facilitate side projects, training the students in rugby and basketball skills and also supporting the school Kapa haka group.Being a passionate man of many talents, I often gave my spare time to create spaces of learning in my own areas of interest. Some of these projects included, lunch time singing, dancing and drama performance groups, organizing a wood carving group with an outside youth organization and helping to set the foundations for an 'enviro-crew', educating and rewarding those with an interest in sustainable practices. One of my key strengths in this role was my ability to calm an intense situation whilst also offering some wrap-around-support, encouraging a conscious awareness of ones behavior. I aim to keep in regular contact with the school, hoping to become a member of the school board in the near future.
  • The Wellington Boys & Girls Institute (Bgi)
    Youth Worker/Kaitiaki
The Wellington Boys & Girls Institute (Bgi) Feb 2020 - Nov 2020
    Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand
I worked at BGI as a part-time Youth Worker whilst studying for my Certificate in Youth Development at PRAXIS NZ.I am a firm believer in giving back to ones community and was grateful to be able to work in an institute that supported me when I was in and transitioning from school. My role at BGI included but was not limited to; Co-facilitating a youth group every Monday afternoon, facilitating and support our "Journeys' program as well as supporting any other roles I had the time to contribute to. Being involved with BGI since I was 11 years old, attending and volunteering on a number of different programs, opened my eyes to an array of different ways we can support our rangatahi (young people) and would be a big reason why I have returned to work in a similar working environment.
