Jesse Fonkert has a passion for economic development and community advancement. Originally from Mobridge, SD, he embarked on a journey of education and growth at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, where he successfully double majored in Business Administration and Government/International Affairs. In 2014, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, laying the foundation for his career that was complimented by a series of impactful internships at First PREMIER Bank, Lincoln & Minnehaha County Economic Development Associations (LCEDA/MCEDA), the Sioux Falls Development Foundation, and the Office of Congressman Kevin Cramer. In 2015, Jesse embarked on a new chapter, assuming the role of Program Analyst at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in Washington, D.C., specifically within the Office of Commissioner Tony Clark. Transitioning from federal to local spheres, Jesse dedicated nearly four years to the City of Hartford, SD, as the Chamber & Economic Development Director. Hartford's leadership and his vision helped breath new life into downtown Hartford, bolstered the Chamber of Commerce, and catalyzed the Hartford Area Development Foundation's growth through the forward-thinking initiative, Envision Hartford 2025.April 1, 2020 marked the beginning of Jesse's role as the Executive Director of LCEDA/MCEDA. A driving force in economic progress, he played an instrumental role in the 2021 merger that birthed the Sioux Metro Growth Alliance (SMGA), where he served as President & CEO. Jesse's leadership encompassed sixteen municipalities across four counties, united in the pursuit of regional economic development.Jesse Fonkert's journey took another significant turn in September 2023, as he assumed the role of Deputy Commissioner in Governor Kristi Noem's Office of Economic Development (GOED).Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jesse finds fulfillment as a devoted husband to his wife Kelsey and proud father to their daughters Astrid & Katherine. Anchored in Hartford, they actively engage in their community, embodying the spirit of positive change Jesse advocates for in his career.
