Project Geologist / Summer Mine Geologist
For the most part, I worked at Terrafame as one of five project geologists at 2.5 years long diamond drilling campaign. The campaign was finished successfully in every aspect and I am glad that I had the change to go through the process from start to finish.During the campaign, my main tasks were to supervise drilling, log oriented drillcore (lithology, geotechnical data, structures, PLT, assays) and to keep related logistics working. I also worked on numerous smaller tasks that one comes across in 2.5 years, such as teaching new project geologists, working as geotechnician, developing logging manuals and methods, modelling geological formations in Leapfrog and numerous other tasks. After the campaign was finished, I applied to Terrafame 2022 Summer Mine Geologist three month position, and I got in. After the 1 month initial training, I got full control over Terrafame mine geologist tasks for few weeks. I am glad to say that overall my performance was good.During the last three months time, I learned to use some aspects of Surpac, Deswik, Pix4D and OrePro 3D. I also learned how to use flying drone photogrammetry to model how blast field rock mass moves during explosions, in order to draw accurate ore-waste loading maps for excavating. Rock mass movement was modelled in OrePro 3D, which required topography models from Pix4D and grade block models from Leapfrog. Deswik and Surpac was mainly used to draw digital maps and for some other basic tasks.Flying drone photogrammetry, or just photogrammetry in itself, is definitely the most impressive data acquisition method I have come across so far, and luckily I got the chance to get into it with Terrafame in numerous ways. The combination of older mapping methods, some spray paint and photogrammetry was especially effective.Terrafame proved to be an excellent change for me develop my skills and experience as a geologist, and I am looking forward to putting all of my skills to good use in following projects.
Master Degree
I graduated as a Master of Science in the field of geology and mineralogy. My pro gradu subject was "Hydrothermal alteration and host rock composition of the Pyhäsalmi volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit, Central Finland."
Geologist
I worked as a geologist for Palsatech Oy, a company that provides geological and geotechnical services as a contaractor. I took part in several projects, but my main task was drillcore logging and geotechnical work.As I have been working for Palsatech, I have accumulated quite a bit of working experience on drillcores and the many aspects of drillcore logging (lithological logging, sampling, rock mechanics, drillcore orientation and measuring oriented drillcore and several kinds of logging templates) and some experience as a underground mine geologist. I also gained some teaching experience as I was "showing the ropes" for new co-geologist at Palsatech and later when I worked as consultant/project geologist on the last project I was in. In terms of geological experience, I have studied chromite rich ultramafic layered intrusion at Elijärvi and some of the sulphide enriched black schists at Tuhkakylä.Palsatech Oy provided an excellent starting point into the field of professional geology for me, and I appreciate the time I spent working there.
Summer Trainee, Geologist
I worked as a summer trainee at geological department of Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy. My study focused on several drillcores, 2.1km in total, which were provided to me by Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy.I produced graphical logs of these drillcores, collected samples for whole-rock geoghemical analysis and thin sections. I also supervised my assistant to measure the geophysical properties of the drillcore rocks, such as susceptibility, specific gravity and conductivity.Later work on the collected data is not included in this time period.
