About Jesse Jacob

I'm an experienced senior architect who has defined design direction for SaaS platforms and designed several major infrastructural and customer-facing feature areas of SaaS systems in multi-team, multi-org and multi-product environments. In my current job I have designed the plumbing and customer/support/ops-facing infrastructure that powers our M&A strategy.I love leading engineering organizations through complex technical and cultural changes, I'm as comfortable designing features and capabilities as I am strategies, and I love teaching & mentoring technical leaders. I've had a lot of success throughout my career designing capabilities with a quality-of-life-oriented mindset for both customers and engineers. I incorporate principles of observability, automation, and CI/CD into everything I do to sustainably increase the pace of change while continuously reducing dev/QA/SRE friction and toil. I foster a culture of ownership, continuous learning, and mutual respect across engineering, operations, customer support, and product management roles and I love using metrics and automation to drive change. If you tell me DevOps is just a job title, or that your app being a special snowflake is why you can't embrace change, prepare for a long conversation with charts and data and research. Let's do this!

    Bloomington, Minnesota, Us
I designed front office software features for two teams working on Avionte's staffing platform on AWS & Azure. Both teams worked with .NET Core microservices, distributed cloud technologies (SignalR, Redis, Lambdas, Kinesis, Azure Service Bus, web jobs, Hangfire, etc.) and TypeScript-based AngularJS components.I worked closely with the product management team to create and maintain short term feature pipelines and long-term strategies for building out front office functionality for our SaaS platform.

  • General Mills
    Application Architect Ii
    General Mills May 2013 - Jan 2017
    Minneapolis, Minnesota, Us
I was the core sites architect for Precision Marketing Capabilities primarily responsible for providing technical and design guidance for four scrum teams of up to 35 developers, and working with site planners, analysts, PMs, and product owners to plan stories and provide architectural specifications for capabilities related to site performance, our shared Sitecore component suite, custom site features, and the content search pipeline for our largest Sitecore/ASP.NET sites like bettycrocker.com and pillsbury.com.I also led the Software Quality Community of Practice. I spent ~25% of my time evangelizing and working individually with developers and project leaders from all over the business to help build competency in areas like maintainability, code review, automated testing, static analysis, and continuous integration for .NET and JavaScript. I love training and mentoring developers and helping the business understand the value of software quality! As part of my software quality evangelism I managed several developer-facing systems. I created a Jenkins CI implementation for my department when I first started at GMI, and worked closely with technical leaders in 2015 and 2016 to scale Enterprise Jenkins to replace the company's homegrown build & deploy tools, and helped create practices and automation logic to support a continuous delivery option for our largest websites. I'm very passionate about code review, so I managed two review tools used regularly by more than 100 developers. In 2015 I won a Global Distinction Award for "visionary leadership" in software quality for my work making continuous integration and code review first class citizens at GMI. I won another Global Distinction Award in 2016 for "innovation" for my work bringing Elastic Search to GMI as an enterprise capability.
  • Ilm
    Principal I Consultant
    Ilm Sep 2012 - May 2013
I worked for ILM as a field consultant and on their technical leadership team working with an amazing group of talented developers. While I was there I worked on a single long-term contract at General Mills developing reusable components for their brand site development teams. I also organized technical writing among the field consultants and wrote articles for the ILM Best Practices web site.
  • Magenic
    Senior Consultant
    Magenic May 2012 - Sep 2012

I completed three projects during my tenure: a design for a conversion from a 3-tier architecture to Windows Azure for the flagship product of an international parking software and equipment maker, a proof-of-concept Windows 8 Store application for a national provider of software tools for non-profits, and a prototype for a SaaS reference management tool for one of the largest media and information management companies in the world.
  • Prosar
    Software Architect
    Prosar Apr 2009 - May 2012
I was lucky to work with a fantastic group creating applications and reporting tools that helped patients and health care professionals send adverse event data to our customers, FDA, and EMA. I provided process and technical guidance for developers and QA personnel that conformed to strict FDA regulatory guidelines for software quality, all of which passed many audits by customers and FDA without incident.During my time there, I guided developers and management away from classic ASP and VB6 to a pure .NET development model. I created guidance for application layering, designing for testability, use of continuous integration, and the collection and analysis of code coverage metrics. I created several major reporting applications to manage the tremendous growth of the company’s call center and pharmacovigilance operations incorporating all of these elements on ASP.NET MVC 2 and 3. I made extensive use of LINQ to SQL, jQuery/jQuery UI, and the OpenXML SDK for document generation.
  • Adecco Engineering & It
    Software Engineer
    Adecco Engineering & It Oct 2008 - Apr 2009
    Zurich, Ch
I worked at McKesson Provider Technologies, subsidiary of McKesson Corporation, on a major update to Horizon Lab, a suite of applications for hospital laboratory automation. I designed and coded UI and middle-tier logic to create new WPF front-ends for the Results Monitor application and tie them to legacy services. The update was the first in more than a decade, and was well-received by customers.
  • Life Time Fitness
    Contract Software Developer
Life Time Fitness May 2008 - Sep 2008
    Chanhassen, Mn, Us
I worked for FCA Construction, a subsidiary of Life Time Fitness in charge of real estate and club construction. I worked on a fixed-bid contract to create FCAViewer, a construction project visualization and reporting tool for architects, construction foremen, and senior management that encompassed all in-process club construction projects. The tool replaced a series of expensive and time-consuming manual processes and allowed architects and management to intervene in hours instead of weeks to head off expensive change orders or permitting delays. FCAViewer was a WinForms desktop application written in C# using LINQ to SQL on a custom database. It featured an interactive site visualization UI and generated custom status reports for each user role.
  • Provamation
    Cofounder & Lead Software Engineer
    Provamation Mar 2007 - Apr 2008
Two former Guidant employees and I started a business to develop the tool I'd created while on sabbatical for clinical study design using Microsoft Word. We worked on the product for over a year and learned a lot about writing off-the-shelf software and running a business. The application was written in C# using a variety of technologies and libraries, and was built using Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO). Ultimately we were not able to self-sustain before we ran out of capital and we returned to the work force.
  • Sabbatical
    Ex-Pat
    Sabbatical Mar 2006 - Feb 2007
I decided to leave Guidant after Boston Scientific completed their takeover. I lived in Chiang Mai, Thailand (including during the military coup) and traveled in SE Asia for a year. While I was away, Guidant sold most of the software I had developed for clinical study automation to a software company who rebadged and resold it to several other clinical research organizations. I decided to create a new tool for clinical trial design based on the CDISC Operational Data Model using Microsoft Word, which most clinical researchers use to write their study protocols.
  • Guidant
    Software Engineer
    Guidant 1999 - 2006
I led a team of desktop admins in IT operations specializing in workstation and server configuration and software delivery automation. I wrote a lot of custom software to do my job well, so I decided to start writing code full time. I moved to clinical research and led several projects to create applications and automate processes for clinical researchers and bio-statisticians working on human clinical trials of implantable pacemakers and defibrillators. All of my software was part of “quality systems” that complied with FDA software validation guidance and were regularly subjected to FDA and internal auditing.
