Responsible for securing and managing SBIR/STTR research programs and other contract research funding to develop and commercialize polymer and materials related technologies. My group’s focus includes early-stage R&D on polymer and sol-gel based aerospace coatings, adhesives, and sealants as well as multifunctional materials for textiles, corrosion protection, energy storage, sensors, composites, and environmentally responsive systems. Studied the use of thermally responsive polymer electrolytes to control electrochemical properties (pH, conductivity, charge transfer and diffusion) at elevated temperatures as an inherent safety mechanism in energy storage devices such as Li-ion batteries. Research spanned traditional aqueous solutions comprised of the thermally responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) to more advanced polymer-ionic liquid systems for the development of inherently safe batteries.Investigated the use of roll-to-roll, vertically aligned carbon nanotube modified aluminum current collectors for processable, high power LiFePO4 electrodes in Li-ion batteries.Experience with advanced electrolyte systems (aqueous, nonaqueous, ionic liquid), carbon and conducting polymer nanomaterials (PANI, PPy, CNTs) for high energy density supercapacitors, and advanced Li-ion battery components such as carbon and Li4Ti5O12 anode materials, LiFePO4 and LiCoO2 cathode materials, and both high performance battery separators.
