Chief Technology OfficerLoveholidays Jul 2013 - Aug 2019London, England, GbLoveholidays grew out of a pivot to a new Online Travel Agent business model from the previous affiliate-based business (Travelmatch). We started with the search tech we had already developed for Travelmatch and improved its product reach and scale. We also developed new booking and payment systems to enable the new business model to go live.Over 8 years we expanded the scope of our in-house tech platform to encompass a custom backoffice, a supplier integration hub, a data and analytics platform, a dynamic pricing engine, a customer self-service portal, a customer experience management system, and a mobile app, among others. In the process of building up the platform we managed multiple operational migrations, from shared hosted bare-metal, to dedicated hosted but self-managed KVM, and finally to Kubernetes in Google Cloud. On the development side we automated much of the build, test and deployment steps to streamline the process of getting code into production, achieving hundreds of deployments per day across multiple teams. On the operational side we created and self-hosted an extensive technical monitoring and alerting capability using best-of-breed open source components. My roles across the engineering teams as they grew and evolved allowed me to be involved in defining and building out several iterations of the platform as it grew. -

Head Of DevelopmentTravelmatch Feb 2010 - Jan 2012London, GbTravelmatch was founded in 2010 as an affiliate model holiday search website. I was hired as Head of Development to oversee the creation and launch of the website. At travelmatch we built a full stack holiday search system that indexes tens of millions of package holiday offers every day. The system pulls availability and resort data from the leading brands, accurately pricing the latest package holidays for a range of tour operators. The system also continuously deduplicates qualitative and descriptive data for thousands of hotels from many independent sources. The result is a unique affiliate platform that lets users search and accurately price compare across a range of well-known package holiday brands. -
Java ArchitectTravelfusion Mar 2008 - Sep 2009GbI joined this company in order to take the technical lead on a project to build the world's best online travel search and price comparison website. Travelfusion's core product is an XML webservice that already powers a number of popular travel price comparison websites in alternate geographies. This project is therefore a natural extension to the company's vision to be the leading vendor of up-to-the-minute worldwide travel and price comparison information. The new website would become Travelfusion's 'dot com' public facing online presence.Over an 18 month period I grew the project from a set of requirements into a fully functional product. Over that time I selected the technologies, defined the technical architecture, implemented the major proofs of concepts, and helped to build and mentor a team of developers who became fully capable of taking the product on to realise its full potential.Technologies used were:• GWT for a rich and interactive browser-based UI, and for AJAX-style remoting.• Spring for application component wiring.• Hibernate and MySQL for persistence.• Sitemesh and JSP for server-side page generation.• Tomcat for development and testing.• Glassfish 2.1 cluster for production deployment.• EHCache for distributed memory caching.• JMS for messaging between the website back-end administration functions and acustom admin webapp. -
Java DeveloperGsl Sep 2006 - Dec 2007At GSL we developed a bespoke 'document validation' component for HMRC's online tax return submission service.I worked on designing and building a next generation of the component that drew its validation rules from HMRC's newly introduced Schematron-based business-rule repository. The work involved writing highly optimized and innovative core Java code. We were able to offer a high performance component using only software running on commodity hardware, which our competitors could only achieve using more expensive custom hardware.Technologies used were:• XML and XML Schema document parsing and handling.• ANTLR for XPath expression compilation.• Velocity templates for code-generation.• Core Java for algorithms and optimization.

Java DeveloperEdgenet Feb 2004 - Jul 2006Nashville, Tennessee, UsEdgenet provides advanced intelligent product customisation, configuration and selling tools to clients in the home improvement and retail fenestration sectors.I worked in a team of 10 developers to build a web-based guided selling tool and integrate it with Edgenet's proprietary intelligent product configuration engine. The application was deployed on a Websphere 6 cluster and Sybase. Development and testing was on Tomcat 4.1 and HSQLDB. The front-end was developed using JSF; The middle-tier used an in-house framework; the persistence layer was based on Hibernate 2. We integrated with our proprietary configuration engine via a custom socket-based API. The client’s back-end ERP systems were integrated using XSLT and plain XML over HTTP. -
Java DeveloperEfx (Nz) Ltd. Aug 2002 - Nov 2003EFX is an ISV specialising in custom software for small businesses.I was the sole developer of a job entry and tracking system for a trucking and transport company. The system catered to administrative, truck driver, and customer users. Each type of user had access to different functions - customers could submit jobs, administrators could assign jobs, and drivers could access job details and pickup/delivery instructions. The system also integrated with an SMS gateway to provide a text message alert and notification system. The system was developed using PHP and MySQL. The system has since been extended to integrate a GPS-driven maps-based truck location system.I also led a team of 3 developers to design and build a bespoke Customer Relationship Management system for an Events Management business. It catered to the specific business process, data and reporting requirements of the client. The system was built on JBoss 3.2.1 / EJB, Hibernate 2, Postgres 7.3, and a Swing-based GUI. The system also supported remote clients via RMI over HTTP.

I filled a range of both client- and server- oriented development roles over a 24-month time-frame.The application was built on Weblogic 5.1 and Oracle 8 running on Solaris 8, serving a Swing-based client running on Windows NT. The application logic was deployed using an EJB session facade backed by a TopLink-based persistence layer. The integration architecture to support incoming and outgoing external application interfaces was built on JMS and XML.
