ERD also supports state and national sponsors with research for environmental policy issues and applies environmental science and technology for homeland security consequence management needs.In earlier LLNL assignments, Jesse:• Coordinated 70 FTEs of Chemistry & Materials Science research in nuclear fuel cycle, carbon fuel cycle, hydrogen fuel cycle, materials science, water resources, and environmental security; new initiatives included work in nuclear fuels, carbon fuel cells, hydrogen fuel cells, aerosol mass spectrometry, laser peening for metals, and advanced materials for remote sensing systems• Created and led the Environmental Technologies Program to research, develop, and test thermal and microbiological site remediation methods, environmental sensor systems, technologies for special nuclear materials, and technologies for waste treatment and disposition; this work led to 30 patents and grew to over $85M in research funded by DOE and other sponsors• Managed over 75 scientists and engineers in waste package and near-field environment R&D for high-level nuclear waste management and spent fuel disposition in the Yucca Mountain Project; worked with DOE to support AECL Underground Research Laboratory development• Completed the multi-year Spent Fuel Test--Climax on time and on budget to demonstrate full-scale retrievable underground storage of spent nuclear reactor fuelJesse's professional and technical contributions also include extensive technical writing, teaching for the University of California and a local junior college, and serving in editorial roles for Pergamon Press and Elsevier Science journals.
