As part of the Office of Sustainability, my role is to primarily support and educate faculty and staff on sustainability practices. I do this through trainings and educational programs like Green Workplace and employee orientations. I serve as a connector for faculty, connecting them with campus and community partners in the realm of sustainability. I create educational materials and tools that can be used to integrate sustainability concepts into curriculum and create a campus as lab. I also create training materials for student workers and those serving on the student green fund committee (Charlotte Green Initiative).

As a part of the Water Resources Department, I conduct field work inspecting stormwater facilities/drainage systems, lead teams conducting illicit discharge investigations, and sample stormwater/storm events on short notice. I utilize GIS, Excel, and Word extensively for field preparation, data organization and anaylsis, and reporting. I assist with managing the scientists in training as well as training them on all aspects of the job.

A part of the Water Resources Department. I assisted field teams on various projects related to stormwater infrastructure to include BMP inspections, illicit discharge assessments, storm drain system inspections, and quarterly stormwater testing for industrial and NPDES sites. Assisted in data entry, analysis and report writing.

Worked under a Field Representative assisting with stream water quality testing, conservation easement assessments, data processing and report writing. Also, attended various outreach events partaking in dam removal meetings, tree plantings, and fish shocking.

I developed a research and outreach project centered around plastic pollution focused on the local level. Working under my project supervisor, I wrote a project proposal and budget, receiving funding through the honors program. The project was structured into two components. The first was a scientific study assessing plastic pollution in small freshwater streams along an urban-rural gradient from which the findings informed the community engagement initiatives I took on campus to reduce and improve our plastic usage. Specifically, I assessed the quantity and type of plastic at each site location and collected samples to determine if microplastic was present on the local scale. On campus I focused efforts on plastic films which was the most prominent form of plastic found in my field work, implementing plastic film recycling. I also conducted a campus waste audit and created a library display to educate the community on plastic pollution. I was then fortunate to present the project at multiple conferences to include Environment Virginia Symposium, NCRS Water Resources Symposium, and the 2019 AESS Conference.

I participated in an REEU experience with a group of interdisciplinary students titled the confluence of water and society, pertaining to the Mountain Valley Pipeline. My research specifically focused on understanding how the pipeline construction and related land use changes impact soil and mountain stream systems.
