About Dr Jessica Borger, Phd

I am a passionate science communicator, immunologist, educator and national leader in Diversity and Inclusion in STEMM. Following 14 years in the UK as an academic researcher, including being awarded a prestigious Medical Research Council (MRC) PhD scholarship from University College London and an MRC grant at the University of Edinburgh, in 2019 I transitioned into education appointed as the inaugural Graduate Course Convenor at the School of Translational Medicine, Monash University. I led the design and establishment of the Master in Clinical Research (Translational Medicine) whilst coordinating the Translational Research PhD coursework program. As the current Scientific Education Program Leader at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, I lead the management and ongoing development of the Honours, Masters and PhD programs. As the Graduate Research Coordinator for the Dept of Medical Biology, University of Melbourne (WEHI), I am committed to identifying, creating and implementing novel scientific professional development resources and tools to provide our graduate students with beneficial knowledge and skills to apply within their current research roles and to enhance their career progression in academia and beyond.My passion for science communication was acknowledged in 2019 by invitation to become News and Commentary Editor for Immunology & Cell Biology, and in 2023 I was promoted to Immunology Futures Editor, a new section designed as a forum to promote dialog and provide a platform to elevate the voices of diverse immunologists to provide multiple perspectives on a successful career in immunology.I have advocated on gender equity nationally in the media by writing for The Conversation, The Australian, Women's Agenda, Women in STEMM Australia and Monash Lens and giving expert opinion in the Australian Financial Review and COSMOS.In acknowledgement of my contributions to STEMM, I was awarded a Veski Inspiring women STEM sidebyside scholarship for mid-career emerging leaders and was the inaugural recipient of the Margaret Baird Women in Immunology Award from the Australia and New Zealand Society of Immunology (ASI) (2019). In 2021 I was the recipient of the Monash University Dean's Award of Excellence in Education for 'Teaching Excellence' and in the same awarded the Vice Chancellors Award for Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion, and a second Dean's Award for Diversity and Inclusion. In 2024 I was awarded the ASI Cheers-Buchan Education Award recognising significant contributions to the advancement of immunology education.

Research is focussed on understanding how miRNA control immune signalling and how pathogens manipulate these processes. DC involvement in an in vivo model of murine infection of the parasitic helminth Schistosoma mansoni focussed on trying to understand the role of DC in initiating and directing the adaptive immune response to S. mansoni in eliciting Th2 responses. This was addressed primarily by confocal microscopy to identify granuloma formation, structure and cell interactions, with additional studies comparing wild-type to gene-deficient mice to define the source and importance of key molecules during this process. Furthermore, using fluorescent in situ hybridisation, I aim to identify the distribution of specific miRNA involved in S. mansoni infection and associated secretory pathways of miRNA in the liver.

Research was focussed on interrogating early T cell signaling events, in regard to the localisation of key signaling molecules and how distribution of these critical protein tyrosine kinases may differentially localise between naive and memory CD8+ T cells, conveying in part, why memory T cells have a more robust response to infection. The difference in response between naive and memory T cells we also found to be dependent on the association of TCR with the coreceptor CD8, with memory CD8+ T cells having more preformed TCR:CD8 clusters than naive cells.
