About Jessica Esplin

Experienced Horticulturist with a demonstrated history of working in the renewables and environment industry. Skilled in Sales, Pottery, Wilderness First responders, Presentations, and Training. Strong operations professional graduated from Southern Utah University. I’ve worked in the Research and Horticulture departments at The Arboretum at Flagstaff for two years. Upon moving to Washington state, I will be attending Bastyr University to pursue a Herbal Science degree and certification in Holistic Landscape Design. Recently, I completed my Master Gardener certification through the Arizona State University cooperative extension and continue to use acquired Botany skills in the community here. I have a keen interest and knowledge base surrounding herbs and ethnobotany. As well as experience in the growing and propagation of native flora of the Colorado Plateau in The Arboretums' greenhouses. My goal while living in Flagstaff has been to dive deeper into plant science and the importance of conservation and restoration while being a part of a progressive community. I did so through the BLM-funded Seeds of Success program. Within the Arboretums' research department, I’ve worked with volunteers to collect endemic seeds needed for the valuable desert tortoise and pollinator habitats in the Mojave Desert. This position has been self-directed and allowed me to use my detail-oriented, organizational, and creative problem-solving traits.I moved to Flagstaff after I fulfilled a year contract working with Elements Traverse Wilderness Therapy as a Group Lead in Southern Utah supporting and mentoring young adults from all over the world with trauma, addiction, and emotional and behavioral struggles. This program was focused on equality, inclusion, and creating meaningful change in individuals through adventure therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy skills. I was able to broaden my leadership and teaching skills while helping the lives of others through strong communication and interpersonal relationships. I embraced growth in this challenge and left the company feeling full of purpose and passion for my authentic self. Directly following my time in wilderness therapy, I spent two months volunteering with a diverse community in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico to build an Earth-ship and recondition harsh soil for planting, ultimately setting up the land to cater to the communities needs of sustainability. I also have five-plus years of retail, inventory, and warehouse management experience with the Utah Shakespearean Festival and Zion Adventure Company.
