My internship at Wyo Dino helped me to develop my paleontology skills through field work and laboratory processing. During my time in this position we were extracting fossils from several different sites, all of which were from the Morrison shale. My field duties included removing rock matrix to expose fossil material, giving each specimen piece an ID number and keeping records for each site, measuring strike and dip for each fossil specimen, and extracting fossils from matrix to be transported back to the museum. Once fossils were in the lab, I removed rock matrix with a vibrating chisel tool and helped to identify bone type and phylogenetic group where necessary. In the laboratory, we were also processing mass quantities of Maiasaura fossils (primarily from the vertebral column). The Maiasaura fossils were outsourced to us from a different museum, so these fossils had to be labelled separately and organized so they could be returned properly.In addition to these duties, we also interacted with the public through dig site tours, school field trips, and "dig-for-a-day" programs. We were responsible for educating our guests on the history of the sites, and the natural history of the specimens we were working with.
