My name is Jessi, and I am a recently graduated psychology student from Luther College! My current goals are to take a gap year before graduate school, in which I have officially been accepted into TeachForAmerica. Due to this program, I will be teaching K-8 special education in inner-city Columbus, Ohio beginning in May. I could not be more excited to experiment with different professions, meet new people, and explore locations that will enhance my strengths and the community. I have had a passion for helping others since high school, when I discovered how fascinating the human mind could be through my senior year psychology course. Since then, I’ve dabbled in coaching tennis for kids with Autism, teaching swim lessons to youth, job shadowing with a speech pathologist, working as an outreach specialist in counseling services at my college, and taking a diverse plethora of classes. Today, I find the most joy in my current job at Opportunity Homes, where I work with individuals with developmental disabilities to reach their fullest potential. I also enjoy volunteering at the local humane society to spread my love to the dogs and cats :) While I have plans for my near future, I am still exploring several career opportunities after TFA. I work with four men at one home and four women at another, in which I ensure they are living cohesively by sharing responsibility in their homes (cooking, cleaning, household chores, maintaining proper hygiene). As a part of their protection and advocacy, I also count their money and make sure their meds are being taken at the respective times. I've most effectively learned how understand what an individual needs by paying attention to what they're communicating and taking notice of how they flourish in their environment. -

This meant showing up on time for my shift, performing well in high pressure situations, and being adaptable when a task or position needed attention.
