Since I had last worked at Appleton all three paper machines on site had be shut down, only the coater was still running. I was asked to come in for a special project regarding the winder. Since the shutdown of the machines they could not make jumbo reels with little to no splices as they use to, with the machines on site. They were now combining reels that were brought in to make jumbo reels to run through the coater. While this worked for the coater it bottle necked the process, as well as caused the winder many problems. I worked with the crew and scheduler to optimize the process while minimizing the splices per roll going to consumers. The number of splice free rolls going to consumers increased by fifteen percent. This met the required splice free spec. This internship was a great opportunity to take charge on a project and practice my leadership skill. It was a challenging environment and many of the people working on the crew had doubts in the changing procedure. I was able to use my communication skills that I have developed from my past internships to get them to work with me on this assignment. This was a very successful project and an excellent experience. Show less -
