I work with a team of data engineers who build data pipelines and maintain Trade Me’s data lake. I'm proud to have seen the team become more customer focused, and more engaged in learning to be a lean and agile team.This role involves:Product• Regular consultation with our customers (analysts and data scientists) to learn how we can improve our products to meet their needs.• Testing new products and gathering feedback before rolling-out to all customers.• Ensuring we are working on products that live up to the team’s vision and Trade Me’s strategic direction.• Communication about the purpose of our product, how it fits within the business, and which parts the team is responsible for.Delivery• Backlog prioritisation, ensuring the team understands why we are working on certain things, reducing distraction and providing direction.• Encouraging simultaneous discovery and development to keep the team one step ahead, and maintaining the balance between building cool things, and building important useful things.• Ensuring we are following principles of lean software development, and running regular rituals – planning, refinement, retrospectives, standups.• Helping the team to identify and implement practices of continuous improvement.

This role involved working with a number of analytical tools, and I had the pleasure of working with people right across the business. My team supported central teams (e.g. Customer Service, Communications, Insurance, Search, Mobile, Design, Trust & Safety), and provided support to analysts in other areas of the business, and working alongside Business Intelligence.My role involved owning the Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager products, of which we have one of NZ's largest and most complex implementations. This is used by hundreds of employees every month, and is one important tool used in decision making within the business. I liaised with analysts and developers to ensure tracking was implemented according to best practice. I trained employees to use these tools, managed what was being tracked across the site, and advised on how we could implement new or improved tracking.I work with Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Power BI, AWS (Athena), R, Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager.

First point of call for phone calls, emails and visitors to the very busy head office for this end-of-life care charity. Part of the Integrated Data team (Feb 2014-Mar 2015) that builds and maintains a world-leading database called the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) that integrates administrative data for research and analysis. I was responsible for getting multiple new datasets in to the IDI including some highly sensitive, high priority datasets to contribute towards allocations of Budget 2015.Using SQL 2012 I helped to maintain the system by carrying out basic queries and trouble-shooting when errors occurred. I wrote system specifications to add new data or resolve historical issues, and then performed user acceptance testing to ensure data flowed correctly through the development, testing and production stages.This role involved a high degree of customer focus, as I communicated regularly with data suppliers and users. I performed output checks on data to be released by researchers to ensure no confidential data was released, and supported them with their queries. I taught new team members about the system and was seen as one of the go-to people with all sorts of questions related to the IDI and our processes. The fast-paced ‘sprint/scrum’ working environment meant regular progress reports using Agile project management to ensure we could meet our deadlines and identify any potential risks. My work involved collaborating with many people such as the IT developers, database administrators, and the linking methodology team, as well as reporting to governance groups. I had regular correspondence with other Government agencies to organise supply of data, which involved writing Business Cases, Memoranda of Understanding, and updating the Privacy Impact Assessment. It also involved doing initial analysis of the data to see if it would meet researcher needs and determine how it should be used.
