The Institute on the Environment (IonE) is an international leader in bringing the power of higher education to create a sustainable future, for the benefit of people and the planet. It is a place where environmental scholars and our non-university partners dream about a sustainable future and bring it into practice.We focus on the creation of: 1) novel insights that draw on interdisplinary research, 2) the development of activated leaders, from students to decision-makers, and 3) the production of transformative environmental media. We know that these ingredients are essential to solving problems and taking action everywhere around the world.Our faculty, staff and students work on a wide range of environmental issues, from sustainable agriculture that feeds the world, to renewable energy that powers the planet, securing life-giving ecosystem services, and helping natural and human systems survive the challenges of climate change, among others. We seed and support this work and work to push it in new ways that inspire and serve society.A flagship initiative is IonE Impact Goals. The initiative convenes the entire IonE community around three tangible outcomes “in Minnesota for the world.” Today, we are focused on making our state carbon neutral, securing clean water for all Minnesotans, and identifying sustainable land use at a state-wide scale.

The Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (CASC) is hosted by a public university (Univ Minnesota), composed of a multi-institution consortium (below), and managed by the National CASC that oversees the nationwide network and pursues multi-region projects of national significance. These partnerships ensure access to a broad range of scientific expertise, production of high-quality science and sharing of funds, resources and facilities. University involvement also allows the CASCs to introduce students to the idea of co-producing science, in which scientists and decision-makers work closely together to ensure scientific research and products are usable and directly address real-world problems. Consortium members:University of Minnesota (host), Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, College of the Menominee Nation, the Nature Conservancy, University of Wisconsin, Michigan State University, Indiana University and the University of Illinois.

Geofinancial Analytics is a double-bottom-line benefit corporation whose mission is to accelerate the transition from climate stressors (like methane super emitters in energy & food supply chains) to more sustainable solutions. It’s product, MethaneScan®, delivers transparency on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions via live ESG data solutions that help avert catastrophic climate change.

Museum of Minnesota is an American museum focused on topics in technology, natural history, physical science, and mathematics education. Founded in 1907 and located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution is staffed by over 600 employees and over 1,600 volunteers. The museum's mission statement is to "Turn on the science: Inspire learning. Inform policy. Improve lives."

Water Bar is an artist-led public benefit corporation that goes to the places where water needs tending and serves water – literally and figuratively – in collaboration with other individuals, organizations and networks.

School for Environment and Sustainability

Community of graduate students who seek new and innovative ways to address environmental challenges facing humankind and the planet. Our mission is to:1) Enhance interdisciplinary graduate education and research across departments, research initiatives, and colleges so that novel solutions to vexing problems can be understood, invented, tested, and implemented.2) Train today’s graduate students so that they can address tomorrow’s challenges and opportunities in environment and society and compete in an interdisciplinary, professional marketplace.

ND-GAIN is focused on building resilience to climate change as a key component to better prepare humans and their environment for the coming century. Our mission is to enhance the world’s understanding of the importance of adaptation and facilitate private and public investments in vulnerable communities. Provides two indices of (1) countries worldwide and (2) US cities to support adaptation decision-making and climate change insights.
