Houston Volunteer Lawyers partners with over 100 firms, corporate legal departments, and solo practitioners, and coordinates over 1,000 pro bono attorneys who volunteer their time at legal advice clinics and with direct case representation.As Outreach Director, develop and manage partnerships with local non-profits to serve the low-income community with their legal needs, and provide oversight and development of printed and online outreach materials.As part of the leadership team, responsible for the overall general management of Houston Volunteer Lawyers, including drafting grant applications and reports, and board reports.Responsibilities include:- Develop, execute, and monitor pro bono recruitment efforts, including the Equal Access to Justice Champions program and the annual Service Raiser. Recent achievements include the development of Case Representation Clinic and "Breaking Barriers," a pro bono recruitment workshop on best practices for working with low-income clients.- Develop, coordinate, and implement a comprehensive pro bono training program. As the Director of the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) program, I am responsible for the overall management of the program, which provides assistance to low-income individuals with a tax controversy with the IRS, including audits, tax-related identity theft, Innocent Spouse relief, tax return preparer fraud, and collections.Achievements include:- People's Law School at the University of Houston Law Center, the regular speaker on Tax Law. Fall 2015, Spring 2016, Fall 2016, Spring 2017.- Established a new partnership in 2013 with Neighborhood Tax Centers, part of the Baker Ripley Neighborhood Center, for a monthly walk-in legal advice clinic.Responsibilities include:- Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, including creating and maintaining the program plan.- Draft the annual grant application and required grant reports.- Plan and conduct tax-specific legal advice clinics.- Participate in the Tax Court Calendar Call program, providing legal advice to individuals who are representing themselves before the U.S. Tax Court.- Prepare cases for volunteer attorneys, including interviewing the clients, gathering relevant information from clients and the IRS, and drafting a summary of the facts and work required for each individual case.- Mentor volunteer attorneys as they assist clients with tax controversies.- Present CLEs on Offer in Compromise and other tax matters, and the need for pro bono representation in IRS matters.- Conduct tax-related education activities for low-income and English-as-a-Second-Language taxpayers. - Represent the organization at community outreach events.
