Co-Directed a summer camp for high school students interested in health care careers in Vermont's rural Northeast Kingdom and redesigned camp format to allow for more shadowing experiences for students, and more career growth activities.

Independently designed, optimized, and subsequently adapted experimental protocols investigating the role of neutrophils in endothelial barrier function in vitro within a Brown University affiliated laboratory; trained and supervised undergraduate students and research residents in the implementation of the research. Specific projects address the role of a novel protein CAP37 (Heparin Binding Protein) in autocrine homeostasis of endothelial function using human umbilical vein endothelial cells, and the affect of stored blood on endothelial monolayer integrity, as a possible mechanism behind edema in repeat transfusion patients.Volunteer Activities: Accompanied Dr. Albina, director of surgical research and professor of surgery, on his weekly patient rounds and engaged in discussions concerning patient treatment, specifically their post-operative dietary needs.

• Implemented research on premature birth using both an animal model and analysis of human tissue samples, specifically sought to determine the relationship of hormones present and relative levels in the ripening of the cervix leading to susceptibility of the uterus for delivery.• Skills include: Supervised and trained two Maternal Fetal Medicine research fellows, continual adaptation and development of laboratory procedures; preparation, composition and statistical analysis of data; Real Time PCR; plasmid synthesis; DNA sequencing; tissue culture; preparation of protein for and running of Western blots; electron microscopy; and thin sectioning of tissue.

Facilitated and oversaw laboratory academically affiliated with Brown University in studies of the experimental mechanisms of alcohol and opiate addiction. Responsibilities included protocol design and ensuing literature research, and aided in grant and publication authorship.Detailed skills included: stereotactic microsurgery; cryostat tissue sectioning; immunohistochemistry; animal handling and care; behavioral studies in mice; analysis of brain tissue and neurochemistry; and composition and upper level statistical analysis of data.Supervised one technician and three undergraduate students, who concurrently developed three different research studies, and facilitated communication between primary investigator and respective teams.
