The Brattleboro Retreat, a private, non-profit freestanding psychiatric hospital with a full continuum of care, offers an MSW practicum placement at the Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Programs. These are intensive day programs, which meet Monday-Friday for short-term treatment (2-6 weeks, on average). There are two distinct programs, and an intern would have an experience in each of them: a general; PHP/IOP program, and one specifically intended for a cohort of healthcare providers and first responders (HPFR). I worked with the general population for four months and the HPFR population for four months. Staff members work on an interdisciplinary team that includes psychiatry, psychology, and social work staff. PHP/IOP programs provide significant experience in group therapy work (as PHP/IOP programs are group-based), but also involves individual psychotherapy, and case management with a caseload of clients. There are many opportunities for ongoing training throughout the year. The staff operates in an interdisciplinary team based model, with frequent team meetings, clinical case discussions, etc.

ServiceNet ACCS in Franklin County serves 185 adults 18+ who are served by DMH. We are contracted by DMH to provide outreach/community support to those living in the community with severe and persistent mental health diagnoses. We have continued to provide this support throughout COVID by implementing safety protocols to ensure that staff and the participants we serve are as safe as possible.I carried a caseload of folks with various engagement levels, needs, and goals. Some of these cases involve transport to appointments, shopping and other errands and others include weekly support at their home. I also completed annual paperwork that consisted of comprehensive assessments, treatment plans/reviews and other assessments as needed. I helped with new referrals which required creating a new assessment and meeting with the participant several times to gather all of the necessary information. I was also a part of team meetings that occurred daily, weekly and monthly. Training opportunities included recordings of previous mandatory trainings and live zoom trainings including a harm reduction a training put on by Tapestry Health.I joined staff at the conclusion of my internship as a contracted relief worker for the months of May, June, and July.
