About Jess Nelson, Mph

Jess Nelson, MPH, is a Director in the Evaluation, Economics, & Predictive Modeling capability at The Lewin Group. At Lewin, Jess does project management (PMP certified), program monitoring, qualitative research, and data visualization work for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) projects. She currently works on the CMS State Innovation Group (SIG) Multi-Payer Operations as the Maryland Total Cost of Care model lead. She also previously served as the assistant project manager and the qualitative research sub-task lead on the Comprehensive End-Stage Renal Disease Care Model Evaluation as well as the data visualization lead and DUA task lead.Prior to her work on SIG and CEC, Jess worked on Rhode Island’s State Benefit Exchange to improve the case escalations process and reduce the escalations backlog. She co-led the escalations work stream and worked closely with Connextions/Optum, the State, and other contractors to detect gaps in existing processes, identify solutions, map improvements, and present these recommendations to stakeholders for feedback and buy-in. Jess helped develop new functions and restructure the existing back office team to improve both the communication with the IT/systems management contractor and the overall escalations process. She also performed ad hoc case research and resolution to help eliminate the escalations backlog. Prior to her work at Lewin, Jess completed her MPH in Maternal and Child Health with a concentration in Global Health from the University of Minnesota. She also was a LEND fellow and earned a certificate in Disability Policy from the University of Minnesota. Jess is an AmeriCorps alumna, having completed a year-long position in Santa Monica, CA as a prevention coordinator at Common Ground, an HIV prevention and care organization. At Common Ground, Jess co-ran the homeless youth drop-in center, conducted street outreach, provided needle exchange services, provided overdose (narcan) training, and conducted free HIV testing and counseling.Jess completed her BA at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University with a double major in Biology and Peace Studies. After graduation, she completed a three-month internship at Shtrii Shakti, a women's development NGO in Kathmandu, Nepal, whose focus was on the empowerment of women and youth in Nepal.
