About Jesus Munoz
Hello! I'm glad to see you on my profile. Here is a bit about me that will help you get to know me!I come from a low-income family, which meant growing up, I had many challenges I had to work around. But not only did I grow up with limited opportunities because I lived because of poverty, I am also first-generation American. I often remember sitting on a street-light lit bench, the company of my no. 2 Ticonderoga pencils and the occasional cockroach, as I would spend my nights preparing for my upcoming exams. But the difficult life challenges I have faced have helped me grow as a person: both in my character and my career experience. I have grown an appreciation for work ethic and academic growth. Personal growth has also given me the opportunity to explore for myself and to discover what else is available in the world. From coming to Brown, I have dived into research, and what it truly means to be in academia. Currently, I am a sophomore majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with an interest in either wet-lab medical or biological research. I have experience in wet-lab research and have worked with both in vivo and in vitro models. I would like to highlight my experience working with mice and tissue culture. Working in a lab has taught me the importance is failure, and how to recover from it. I have used the lessons from the bench and brought them to other aspects of my life! I also believe in bringing in more diverse voices to academic spaces. I am a strong proponent in diversifying science to better integrate underrepresented communities. Aside from my academic and career endeavors, I also like to keep true to my other hobbies! I enjoy volunteering at the Rhode Island Free Clinic as a Spanish Interpreter and use my interpreting skills in many of the spaces I enter (such as through tutoring!). I’m also a big explorer and I enjoy checking out the city around Brown and its neighboring states. I have learned a lot from exploring, and have met different people from around the world. From the connections I have grown over the years, I have come to a greater appreciation for culture and have garnered a love for learning languages!
