Cases are often won and lost by the quality of a party’s written briefs, making persuasive legal writing an essential element of any party’s litigation strategy. I have significant experience in leveraging motion practice and procedure throughout the litigation process, from early motions to dismiss to post-trial motions and appellate argument, in order to resolve disputes in my clients’ favor and to save my clients money and, even more importantly, time. My writing and advocacy has recently led to the following successes on behalf of my clients:1. Summary judgment in a property owner’s favor in a challenge of a municipality’s unlawful zoning and planning decisions;2. Dismissal of claims alleging fraud and unfair business practices and award of attorneys’ fees for a client in the medical industry;3. Affirmance on appeal of a successful defense verdict in a commercial case in which the plaintiff sought more than $20 million in alleged lost-profit damages; and4. Dismissal of all claims in a shareholder dispute due to lack of jurisdiction.I also appear frequently before Minnesota and federal appellate courts. Appellate practice requires a thorough knowledge of applicable standards of review to identify reversable legal issues, and a strong writing background to persuade judicial panels that the lower court got it right or wrong. I am dedicated to the Minnesota legal community. I co-author four volumes of the Minnesota Practice Series—the seminal treatise on Minnesota law and procedure—including the Minnesota Handbook of Courtroom Evidence and Civil Rules Annotated. I am a member of the Minnesota Supreme Court Advisory Committee on the Rules of Civil Procedure, and I’m active as a speaker on issues ranging from court rules and appellate practice to insurance coverage. I am also active in the community. I am a governing member of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and a founder of Arts Roseville, which seeks to advance local arts and creativity. Before joining Maslon, I served as a law clerk to the Honorable G. Barry Anderson of the Minnesota Supreme Court, and before that I was a middle and high school choir teacher.
