Profile bio

About Jez Pike

I'm a theatre director and occasional designer and playwright, with experience of working in both professional and community theatre. As a freelance director my work includes currently We're Staying Right Here by debut playwright Henry Devas, which is playing at The Park Theatre, London until the 23rd March.Since December 2016 I have been the Director of Productions at The Maddermarket Theatre, Norwich. Recent productions there include by own re-imagined version of J.M. Barrie's Quality Street and the theatre's 2018 Christmas show, James & The Giant Peach which featured puppetry, masks, an actor on stilts and sharks on scooters. My next production at the theatre in May will take me into very different territory: Samuel Beckett, with an intimate double-bill of Krapp's Last Tape and Rockaby in the theatre's studio.Previous Maddermarket productions include Nell Gywnn by Jessica Swale, Swallows & Amazons adapted by Helen Edmundson and Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth. The latter was selected by Nick Hern Books as part of a showcase at their Amateur Theatre Fest in September this year. On all productions at the theatre i've been either sole set designer or co-set designer. Past freelance experience includes a number of productions for Theatre by the Lake in Cumbria, including The Winterling by Jez Butterworth which was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the UK Theatre Awards 2014. My development has been punctuated by a number of fantastic experiences assisting high profile directors, most notably the late Howard Davies MBE.In addition to directing i have experience of devising and running educational workshops for ages 8-21 within school, theatre and university environments. I have a particular interest in dramaturgy and developing new writing and have facilitated new writing development workshops and schemes.

Listed skills include Stage, Theatre, Drama, Performing Arts, and 14 others.

Artistic leader of Norwich's leading community theatre located in the heart of the city. Home to The Norwich Players since 1921, the Maddermarket Theatre consists of a 300 seater main house, a flexible studio space, and during my tenure ran an education arm, Mad Red Theatre School. My role included being the principle director of in-house work, and developing a new creative and business strategy for the organization in coordination with the theatre's General Manager.
