About Jean-François D'Arcy
Hi, I'm JF! My passion is to use our understanding of human behavior and science to solve real-world problems. I use valid and reliable evidence to inform product development, support organizational decision making, and develop and implement innovative business models.During my B.S. in Psychology, I developed a fascination for human cognition and for how computers could think like humans. My interest for cognition and artificial intelligence (AI) led me to obtain an undergraduate degree in computer science (AI concentration) and to complete my M.S. and Ph.D. in experimental cognitive psychology at the Université de Montréal because they had just launched an interdepartmental studies program in cognitive science and AI.During the first fifteen years of my career, I had the opportunity to design and conduct research in multiple safety-critical domains (e.g. air traffic control, helicopters, fighter jets, nuclear power). During the last ten years, I conducted qualitative and quantitative UX research in the domains of human capital management (payroll and HR-related services) and software testing at two SaaS B2B companies.
Listed skills include Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, Human Factors, Systems Engineering, and 32 others.

My work involves crafting training data, evaluating AI performance, and providing expert insights to refine models for optimal outcome.
Founder
Current- Provide UX research, human factors engineering and software development services. - Cultivate a collaborative approach that blends creativity (design thinking) with data-driven insights to deliver exceptional user experiences.- Currently developing an AI-based SaaS application to help organizations reduce bias and discrimination in their hiring process.
Senior User Experience Researcher
- Led efforts to better understand the needs of web and mobile application software testers and supported the evaluation of new and improved testing platform features.- Advocated for the democratization of user experience (UX) research.- Built a strategic UX research roadmap including strategic and tactical activities (e.g. continuous attitude survey, new billing page usability tests) and research operation improvements (e.g. recruiting templates, research participant panel).- Typical research methods included remote quantitative and qualitative usability tests, user interviews, a continuous online attitude survey, card sorts and tree tests.
User Experience Researcher
- Led and supported user experience (UX) research and usability tests aimed at designing or improving a Business-to-Business (B2B) enterprise human capital management (e.g. payroll, human resources, retirement services, insurance) web-based (SaaS) software to meet or exceed user needs. - Ensured that user needs and usability principles were considered throughout the software development life cycle (SDLC).- Planned and executed user research activities, produced research materials (e.g. screeners, study guides, observation matrices, final reports) and ensured that participant privacy was protected.- Used qualitative and quantitative research methods included usability tests (traditional and RITE), surveys, literature reviews, user persona generation and validation, and journey mapping.
Human Factors Specialist
- Supported Westinghouse Electric AP1000 nuclear power plant control room human factors engineering verification and validation activities. - Ensured that human factors engineering program and products satisfied regulatory requirements. - Led Integrated System Validation (ISV) activities such as a human-in-the-loop simulation to ensure that the integrated system design meets performance criteria and supports safe operations.
Senior Human Factors Engineer
- Supported Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) research studies (human-in-the-loop high-fidelity simulations) measuring controller and pilot performance to evaluate the usability, suitability and acceptability of new air traffic management systems and procedures. - Typical activities included literature reviews, test plan writing, human-computer interface requirement analysis, verification of compliance with FAA standards and guidelines (e.g. Human Factors Design Guide), heuristic reviews, usability testing, data analysis and interpretation, and final report redaction.- Provided human factors engineering support to the Transportation Division on an as-needed basis.
Human Factors Specialist Level 5
- Supported Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) research studies (human-in-the-loop high-fidelity simulations) measuring controller and pilot performance to evaluate the usability, suitability and acceptability of new air traffic management systems and procedures. - Typical activities included literature reviews, test plan writing, human-computer interface requirement analysis, verification of compliance with FAA standards and guidelines (e.g. Human Factors Design Guide), heuristic reviews, usability testing, data analysis and interpretation, and final report redaction.
Research Scientist
- Led and supported human factors research projects focusing on data visualization and automation issues related to decision support systems in domains such as military intelligence analysis. - Studies focused on 1) the perception of different types of visualizations (e.g. hue, opacity, saturation, texture) to represent meta-information using a psychophysical approach (ratio production method), 2) the adequacy of animation, 2D and 3D representations of the movements of individuals on an interactive map application, and 3) the development and evaluation of visualizations for 3D displays.
Human Factors Engineer
- Performed human factors engineering and systems engineering functions in support of aviation and air traffic control system development and research projects such as the FAA’s Surface Trajectory Based Operations (STBO) project. - Tasks included the identification of external requirements for planned NextGen air traffic management systems, a gap analysis verifying that the necessary external requirements will be available when the systems will be implemented, the elicitation of user requirements, design and testing with end-users of an air traffic control tower touch screen graphical user interface (GUI) used to manage the number of aircraft waiting on the taxiways (queues), and a task analysis of commercial pilot surface operations.
Human Factors Design Engineer Staff
- Managed a portfolio of technology transition internal research and development (IR&D) activities that focused on the development of human computer interface technologies that will help operators with their cognitive workload, situation awareness and information flow. - As a member of the Systems Safety and Human Factors Department, supported a variety of rotary wing (e.g. Marine One, K-MAX Unmanned Aircraft System [UAS]), fixed wing (e.g. A-10) and ground vehicular (e.g. JLTV) programs with different services of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). - Ensured that human factors and ergonomics design principles were considered throughout the system’s life cycle and that the design matched operator and maintainer needs. - Tasks included needs assessment, operational analysis, function analysis, function allocation, requirements analysis, verification of compliance with relevant standards and guidelines (e.g. Mil-Std-1472, Mil-Hdbk-46855), task analysis, prototyping, anthropometric analyses (e.g. reach, field-of-view, clearance, and egress analyses), digital human modeling, workload and situation awareness evaluations, trade studies, testing and report writing (e.g. Human Engineering Program Plan [HEPP], Human Engineering Design Approach Document-Operator [HEDAD-O], Human Engineering Design Approach Document-Maintainer [HEDAD-M]).
