We have a joint development agreement with Parker Hannifin and I sit on the oversight committee which reviews and approves projects. As Director of Clinical Research in the department I also mentor staff who are interested in developing research projects in clinical anesthesiology. I am a Vice-Chair for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and have an interest in the conduct of clinical trials and human subjects protection. -

Senior DirectorAdolor Aug 2001 - Sep 2005Senior Director: Responsible for the design and direction of Phase 1-2-3 research studies on novel analgesics. The lead program for the company was the clinical development of alvimopan, a peripherally acting opioid antagonist. I was responsible for the studies to support the clinical pharmacology section of the label, as well as assisting with the Phase 3 program. I worked with our strategic partner, GSK, as the program liaison. I was also responsible for the translational program that was developing novel analgesics. I designed and managed two first-in-man trials for these new molecular entities as well as the proof of concept trials for the treatment of pain. I contributed to the NDA filing for alvimopan, which is now approved for clinical use (Entereg®), and filed two INDs, as well as participating in several FDA meetings.

Assistant ProfessorUniversity Of Chicago 1990 - 2001Chicago, Il, UsAnesthesiologist; Researcher: I led the development program for methylnaltrexone, a peripherally active opioid antagonist. This involved the proof of principle trials in pre-clinical models, the first-in-man studies, and subsequent proof of concept trials and studies of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in man. I was responsible for the regulatory submissions during this period and had several meetings with the FDA. This work was funded in part by grants from the Rice Foundation, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, and Jannsen Pharmaceutica. Methylnaltrexone was licensed out and approved for clinical use (as Relistor®) in the management of opioid side effects in patients with advanced medical illness, such as cancer patients receiving opioids for palliative care.
