I was a Member of the Firm in the Employment, Labor & Workforce Management practice and a member of the Workplace Investigations sub-practice group. My practice included conducting internal investigations for clients in financial services, professional services and other industries, including investigations of claims of discrimination, retaliation, sexual harassment, bullying, and other forms of alleged harassment or misconduct. I also represented employers in whistleblower compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Dodd-Frank Act, the False Claims Act, as well as state law whistleblower statutes. In this capacity, I represented a variety of publicly traded companies and financial services companies, both public and private. I also advised on whistleblower retaliation charges that have been filed with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which has the authority to investigate whistleblower claims under dozens of statutes, including the Sarbanes-Oxley Act; and I provided counsel and advice on whistleblower compliance issues, assisting in the development and application of internal whistleblower policies and advising and participating in internal investigations of claims made by whistleblowers.

I was a member of a three-person employment law team dedicated primarily to serving firm clients in the financial services industry: investment banks, commercial / retail banks, trading firms, private equity firms and hedge funds, with some work for a major sports league as well. S&C is where I gained experience drafting and revising employment, consulting and separation agreements; handling RIFs; and defending arbitrations at FINRA; and I also spent a good deal of time working with the executive compensation & benefits attorneys and transactional lawyers as the labor / employment specialist in mergers and acquisitions.

I spent about 50% of my time working on traditional labor-management matters (union arbitrations, NLRB proceedings, collective bargaining negotiations) and 50% of my time on employment discrimination litigation. Most of my work was for firm clients in the newspaper / media and real estate / building services industries, with some fascinating work for major sports leagues as well.

I served as a law clerk for the Hon. Allyne R. Ross, United States District Judge, for one year after graduating from law school. This was the best and most intense legal research and writing experience of my career, and the chance to observe so many lawyers practice their craft in court was invaluable. And as a bonus, Judge Ross performed the ceremony when my wife and I were married toward the end of the clerkship.
