Work is one of my passions. My 35+ years of experience has included fifteen years helping to organize Olympic Style events around the globe (mainly the US and Russia). This phase was highlighted by working with Turner Broadcasting on the 1994 Goodwill Games in Saint Petersburg, Russia and as CEO of the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill/Cary, NC) which was the largest sporting event in the World that year. In 2000 the second phase of my career started. I joined Cisco and was blessed to learn the broadband business "from the ground up". In 2007, I became President and CEO of MCNC, which owns and operates the North Carolina Research and Education Network. During my time at MCNC, I was fortunate to lead a wonderful team of professionals, who, through a Federal broadband infrastructure grant and private matching funds, built a long-haul/middle mile broadband network that traversed the entire State of NC. This network still today serves the long-haul transport and Internet Access needs all of K-20 education in the State, most rural healthcare providers and several state and local government agencies. In addition, large portions of this network have been leased to private sector service providers who work to bring broadband service to rural parts of NC.In 2014, my wife (April) and I started Mighty River, LLC. Mighty River is a consulting firm that helps our clients navigate the broadband infrastructure and service space. Our clients have included the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the State of Nevada, Alabama Power, Cisco, the North Carolina Rural Center, the City of Fort Worth, EducationSuperHighway and many other local governments. April and I have been graced to be busy since day one of starting Mighty River. We truly love helping and providing value to our clients. In summary, I have really never "worked" a day in my life. I have never had a job. I have only been able to follow my passion, whether sports events or broadband, and in that way I am extremely fortunate.
