About James Gavin

My research interests relate to designing pragmatic exercise programmes for older and/or untrained adults. My PhD examined: 'the impact of glycogen availability on the responses to exercise-induced muscle damage', after which I worked on a project investigating: 'the impact of resistance and stretching exercise on the stair negotiation biomechanics of older adults' (Liverpool John Moores University). These developed me as a musculoskeletal physiologist capable of translating knowledge of exercise adaptation in athletes, to untrained and clinical people. In particularly, focussing on adherence and self-management.Current projects involve: 1) ‘developing a community-based programme for orthopaedic patients to self-manage their recovery’ and, 2) ‘the impact of inspiratory muscle training on balance and mobility of older adults’. Both interventions were developed based on feasibility (i.e. adoptable into the lives of untrained people) and cost-effectiveness; these are imperative to deliver sustainable healthcare internationally.I also act as an NHS (Hampshire A) Research Ethics Committee reviewer, and British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) CPD representative for the Division of Physiology.
