My main responsibilities as FA included to assist a faculty member in the class Enterprise Network management II (IST656) by preparing assignments and quizzes to test students’ skills and progress in the topics covered. I also tutored and assisted students with their questions regarding assignments and topics covered in class. I was in charge of setting up, configuring network equipment for labs that cover topics like routing protocols, VLANs, and inter VLAN routing.

I led the implementation of a security test bed using Cisco and Juniper routers, switches and firewalls, and servers in a mixed OS environment that includes Windows, CentOS, OpenSuse, FreeBSD, Ubuntu, Backtrack, and Open Solaris. A second project included the development and testing of IT security labs following Security+, CEH, and CISSP certifications objectives. CCENT also works with several organizations in the Syracuse area, usually to assess and suggested upgrades in their IT infrastructure. This year our crew began the redesign and deployment of the CCENT network using vSphere to host virtualized servers, which incldue include Windows and Linux.

My time in this internship was fantastic and helped venture in the IT security field. My functions included to research and development projects at the Office of National Special Research in Telecommunications (Dirección Nacional de Investigación Especial en Telecomunicaciones). During this time I tested penetration tools such as backtrack and joined a training program in Information Security and CSIRT Planning for 3 months with an international consultant from KISDI, as part of an agreement between Ecuadorian and South Korean governments, and joined the team in charge of designing the first government CSIRT in Ecuador. I also designed and deployed an application with Java to control an open source PBX (Asterisk) and identify a common telecom fraud in Ecuador known as “loop” that is used to bypass international phone billing systems.
