About Juan Gabriel Garcia Osorio

Mathematician at heart, physicist wannabe and engineer by trade. My main motivation is to solve real world problems even if they have little to do with my background. That's why I am a lifelong learner, trying to enhance my problem solving toolbox and constantly striving to improve my skills and creativity. I have experience working in different fields ranging from environmental sciences to artificial intelligence and have had the opportunity to be part of multidisciplinary teams. This in turn has taught me how to be a team player and assertive when communicating with people from all sorts of backgrounds.

I prototype machine learning/computer vision and math-heavy related software solutions in software such as Python, R or Matlab. Once the prototype is successfully tested, I implement it in C++ to have optimized and efficient software that is ready to be part of the of 3DM's industrial automation products.

I am part of the group of computational fluid dynamics, under Dr. John Stockie's supervision. My research project focuses on estimating the contribution of particulated zinc from a lead-zinc smelter in Trail, British Columbia. For the project, is also necessary to assess the uncertainty associated to the estimates obtained. My research project focuses on estimating the contribution of particulated zinc from a lead-zinc smelter in Trail, British Columbia. For the project, is also necessary to assess the uncertainty associated to the estimates obtained. In order to obtain the estimates, we count with a finite volume code that simulates the pollutant dispersion physics and we also have experimental measurements from the site surrounding the lead-zinc smelter. Currently we are combining the data from the finite volume code and the experimental measurements using the Bayesian framework for inverse problems and machine learning techniques such as Gaussian process regression to perform model order reduction, to make heavy computations feasible. I was part of a multidisciplinary group of researchers in a project to assess how climate change is impacting different economic activities in the region of Cundinamarca, Colombia and formulate strategies to adapt to those changes. As a research assistant I was part of the groups of applied physics and biotechnology. My main two projects were to estimate the amount of water from fog in four forest in the Andean region of Cundinamarca and the optimization of production of brown sugar in… Show more I was part of a multidisciplinary group of researchers in a project to assess how climate change is impacting different economic activities in the region of Cundinamarca, Colombia and formulate strategies to adapt to those changes. As a research assistant I was part of the groups of applied physics and biotechnology. My main two projects were to estimate the amount of water from fog in four forest in the Andean region of Cundinamarca and the optimization of production of brown sugar in Cundinamarca as well. In the first project I had to work with an ecologist and an environmental engineer, mining data from different weather stations to infer the amount of fog captured by the vegetation. In the second project I combined efforts with a mechanical engineer and a physicist to propose and implement low budget instrumentation to improve brown sugar production. Show less
