About John Grundy

I am currently Australian Laureate Fellow a.k.a ARC Laureate Professor and Professor of Software Engineering in the Faculty of IT, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.Previously I was the Senior Deputy Dean for the Faculty of IT at Monash University in 2018 and 2019. Prior to that I was Pro Vice-Chancellor ICT Innovation and Translation and Alfred Deakin Professor at Deakin University. Previously to that, I was Professor of Software Engineering and Dean of the School of Software and Electrical Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology. Before that I was Deputy Dean of the Faculty of ICT, Head of Computer Science and Software Engineering, and Director of the SUCCESS research centre. Before coming to Swinburne I was Head of Department for Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and prior to that, Director of Software Engineering, University of Auckland.I have been PVC, Dean, Deputy Dean, Head of School, Head of Department or Deputy Head of Department for seventeen of the past eighteen years. I have (mostly) enjoyed the challenges that come with these roles, particularly the opportunities to develop and mentor staff, provide leadership both within my discipline and to the Faculty and University more widely, and to provide effective management and administration. I have often been told I bring a collegial, effective, efficient and decisive approach to leadership that is well-respected and appreciated both by the people I have led and my bosses.I am a Fellow of Automated Software Engineering, a Fellow of Engineers Australia, CPEng and EngExec, a Senior Member IEEE and Member ACM.My personal homepage is at https://sites.google.com/site/johncgrundy/Home

Australian Laureate Fellow And Professor Of Software Engineering
Monash University Feb 2020 - Present
    Melbourne, Australia
I am Australian Laureate Fellow - sometimes called "ARC Laureate Professor" :-) - and Professor of Software Engineering in the Faculty of IT at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. In my 5 year Laureate Fellowship I will be researching new approaches to engineering software systems that fully take into account the "human" aspects of end users and team members. This project aims to find fundamentally new ways to capture and use human-centric software requirements during model-driven software engineering and verifying that systems meet these requirements. There are major issues with misaligned software applications in terms of accessibility, usability, emotions, personality, age, gender, and culture. We aim to address these through new conceptual foundations and modelling techniques for their support during software engineering. The intended outcomes are enhanced theory, models, tools and capability for next-generation software engineering with these critical elements. Significant benefits are expected to include greatly improved software quality, developer productivity and cost savings.

I led the development of large teams to scope major projects in Health Technology, Cybersecurity and various applications of ICT to "smart environments". This includes working with a wide range of other leaders including Heads of School of IT, IS, Engineering, Communcation; Directors of Institutes and Directors of Strategic Research Centres and Labs, especially Deakin Software Technology Innovation Lab, Pattern Recognition and Data Analysis, Cybersecurity and Rural Futures; a number of Health SRC Directors; Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education; Director Deakin Research Commercial; various Deakin Research teams; and many others. I also helped to build relationships with various industry, government and international strategic partners. I also supervised a number of ECR academics, mentored many senior and junior academics, lead industry engagement activities for the School of IT, and maintained my own large research team and activities.
  • Swinburne University Of Technology
Dean, School Of Software And Electrical Engineering
Swinburne University Of Technology Jan 2014 - Feb 2016
    Hawthorn
I become Dean of this new School after applying for the position when the University underwent a major restructure at the beginning of 2014. Key responsibilities included strategic leadership of the school, contribution to the Faculty executive and wider university leadership, people leadership, effective financial management, overseeing school teaching, research and engagement activities, working closely with the Heads of Department, Centre Directors, Faculty executive, Associate Deans and others. Deputizing for the Executive Dean on several occasions. Key challenges included having the School staff come from five disparate previous groupings, including two different faculties; a number of university and faculty processes undergoing major change simultaneously; the need to develop a coherent vision, strategic direction, and – ultimately – cohort of staff that most effectively collaborate. I was generally successful in all of these areas despite considerable continuing University change.Key responsibilities included:-Strategic planning-Staff development-Financial management-Operational oversight of teaching and research programmes-Developing industry engagement-My own personal research and teaching

This was a challenging activity with many historic issues to grapple with including conflicting resourcing, personalities, strategic directions, workload, and structures. A new strategic direction and focus areas were set.Key responsibilities included:-Oversee strategic and operational planning for Centre research-Manage staff and budget-Develop profile for Centre-Enhance centre research performance and ranking outcomes

  • Swinburne University Of Technology
    Deputy Dean, Faculty Of Ict

I become Deputy Dean when the previous incumbent moved to a PVC position. I was in the role until the end of 2013, when the Faculty of ICT ceased to exist. • Swinburne University Of Technology
Head, Computer Science & Software Engineering
Swinburne University Of Technology Feb 2010 - Apr 2013
I took over as Head of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) February 2010, shortly after joining Swinburne, and Director, Centre for Complex Software Systems & Services (CS3) in July 2010. It was a largish group of 30-odd academics, ~12 or so post-docs and RAs, ~60 PhDs and ~650 EFTL taught students. A major role was to renew our Tier 1 status by September of 2010. This included amalgamating three disparate research groups (CS3, CSAT Tier 2 Centre and CSSE research activities) into a unified new Centre for Computing and Engineering Software Systems (SUCCESS). This was a challenging activity with many historic issues to grapple with including conflicting resourcing, personalities, strategic directions, workload, and structures. I lead development of a new strategic plan, administrative structures, research support structures, academic programmes revision, invigorated seminars, improved research management and teaching dialogue, and oversaw formation of a new industry advisory board. The centre/group I ran as a “School” or Department in the more traditional sense, which seemed to work out well.
  • University Of Auckland
Head Of Department & Professor Of Software Engineering
University Of Auckland Feb 2008 - Dec 2009
I took over as Head of Department in February 2008 after serving two years as Deputy Head – Research. This was a relatively large Department with 31 academics, around a dozen post-docs, 80 PhD students and around 450 EFTS taught students. The previous Head had been in the job nearly 6 years plus had a previous term. The Department was well run and organised but it was time for a change of direction, carrying out strategic planning, and a new approach to leadership and management. I was well received as Head of Department by staff and fellow Heads, being described by the Deputy Dean – a very experienced academic and ex-HOD - as “one of the most collegial and diligent members of the Executive Team and Faculty”. I left the Department in excellent shape in staffing, finances, management structures and direction. The Department’s research and teaching continued to improve significantly based on all indicators.

  • University Of Auckland
Professor Of Software Engineering And Director Of Software Engineering

I set up numerous administrative structures, chaired the Software Engineering staff committee, served on the Faculty of Engineering executive committee, served on several Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering committees, served on several appointments committees, and set up an industry advisory board. I oversaw development of the new Bachelor and Master of Software Engineering programmes including staffing, teaching allocation and quality control, student representation, strategic and operational planning and marketing and engagement. A major challenge was the programme being split between two Departments in two Faculties, causing innumerable challenges around resourcing, staffing, priorities and even teaching and research philosophy. The programme has been successful with an intake of between 70-90 students 2002-2006, settling to between 30-45 2007-2010.
