John Hartmann is co-founder of Freecell Architecture and is currently teaching at Princeton University's School of Architecture.Freecell is a Brooklyn based architecture, interior design, and fabrication studio that grew out of an obsession to physically engage with materials and mechanics to invent solutions, and it is with this formula that Freecell has created installations, designed exhibitions, and fabricated furniture for over nineteen years. The work relies on active participation of the occupants to surprise and challenge. The site-specific installations that question the use and perception of space have been exhibited at SFMOMA, Pulitzer Arts Foundation, Artists Space, and won a Special Mention Award for the exhibition for the American Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Freecell’s commercial work includes commissions from the fashion brands Alexander Wang, Joseph Altuzarra, and Diesel. John is a recipient of a 2017 Visual Futures Lab residency at SVA. He has also received a MacDowell Colony residency, the Rome Prize, and named an Emerging Voice by the Architectural League. In 2015 he was invited by the Pritzker recipient, Wang Shu, to lead a 5-week workshop in Hangzhou at the China Academy of Art.
