"The St. Joseph Worker Program empowers women committed to social change to respond to the needs of the times. While committing to a year of service, St. Joseph Workers grow in the areas of justice, leadership, spirituality, and living simply in an intentional community." During my time as an SJW, I worked at Centro Guadalupano where I assisted with their ESL programming (through teaching), and the after school programming with curriculum planning, volunteer coordinating, and co-leading the group of elementary students.

As a full-time volunteer through the ELCA's Young Adults in Global Mission program, I lived and worked in a Malay-speaking congregation of the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia. The church has a number of community programs, including supporting their more rural partner churches in the interior of the Borneo rainforest along the Pagalungan River. It was through this partnership that I taught English classes and participated in different ministries from youth group, choir, bible study, and parishioner visits. During my year, I also facilitated a weekly young learners tutoring group and a beginners yoga class.Tenom is located at the foothills of the Crocker Mountain Range, roughly 150 km (90 mi) south of Kota Kinabalu in the eastern Malaysia state of Sabah on the island of Borneo.

In the summer of 2012 and 2013, I worked as Backpacking Guide and Director at Rainbow Trail leading groups of 6-12 people out into the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness for a 4-5 day trip of experiential learning. I managed meds, planned routes, assisted with meals, and nurtured team dynamics. The best part of my job involved building community on the trail, much of which was done through supporting participants and teaching them the skills necessary to run a trip on their own.
