I sit on a team that works with digital marketing on a combination of projects aimed at personalizing marketing efforts to individual customers. This work spans from development, validation, and maintenance of targeting and recommendation ML models through to measurement of the impacts of marketing efforts on business revenues. As a Ph.D. student and researcher, my work was largely independent and self-directed. My primary responsibility was to plan and carry out my dissertation, a large-scale research project focused on using bayesian models to quantify and handle the effects of missing data on PM2.5 estimates derived from satellite products. Within my research group I was also responsible for assisting other students with their own projects as needed, managing 3 other students on a project focused on improving upon existing national UV exposure maps for the CDC and the better understanding the relationship between solar radiation and skin cancer, and running a large climate model in a cluster environment. Data size measured in TB and high-dimensional. ETL covered methodologies that included FTP, SOAP, REST, geodatabases, raster imagery, and most text file formats

Exploratory internship that involved rotating through the various divisions within the Rock Island county health department. The primary goal was to produce and disseminate the updated list of diseases required to be reported through the NNDSS system to medical specialists within the county. Other projects completed as part of the internship included: a phone survey of area pharmacies to investigate awareness of and compliance with a law requiring that needles be made available without a prescription; updates to the website giving more complete information about newborn screenings; creation of a new referral card for STD patients to give to sexual contacts; and writing a series of health-related articles to be published in a local english-spanish newspaper. Overall, I consider this one of the formative experiences in my life. I left this internship with experience, perspective, and knowledge that I wouldn't have been able to gain otherwise, and the experience was instrumental in my later decision to pursue data-intensive research over clinical medicine.
