The seabed of sandy shelf seas consists of various types of rhythmic bedforms. Tidal sand waves can be observed in tidally dominated sandy seas, while smaller patterns like ripples are often superimposed on these sand. These patterns are dynamical bedforms, which can grow and migrate, while they may pose a hazard for e.g. shipping. Moreover, shallow coastal seas form the habitat for a large number of different benthic species and large variations can be seen within the scale of these bedforms. The sea bed life, sediment, hydro- and morphodynamics form a complex coupled system. Human interventions may lead to disturbances in this system, which then needs time to recover. This project focuses on the understanding of the functioning and stability of the coupled system. We study the formation of sandwaves by means of a linear stability analysis, where after we will develop a Delft3D model in which we can simulate sandwaves in the finite amplitude stage. The target application of this project is ecological landscaping in the design of sand extraction operations and offshore constructions. Show less

I developed an idealised, process-based model to investigate the influence of retention basins on the tidal properties in estuaries.
