As Rakuten embarks on launching an end-to-end virtualised network, i am working in the Autonomous Network Research & Innovation Department to explore the application of autonomy and adaptation to its network, including self-* techniques, edge compute, caching, monitoring, and runtime performance. As well as exploring and publishing work on these topics, we are also seeking meaningful bi-lateral collaboration opportunities with academic and industrial research centres.

Previously working within the system group of RIT Tokyo, looking at edge computing as applied to robotics. Specifically on resource efficient technologies.

Was awarded a fellowship to conduct self-proposed research enabling guarantees and automation for self-adaptive systems.During my fellowship, i applied formal methods in a practical way to software which can modify itself at runtime. To complement this, i also explored applying machine learning techniques on how this software can automatically modify its composition at runtime, based on its environment. I also supervised and provided mentorship to a number of masters students.

Work package leader, responsible for programming models and runtime systems, for the hardware being developed as part of the ecoscale.eu Horizon 2020 project.We were exploring hybrid OpenCL programming models and creating a novel runtime system for future exascale computing platforms. The fundamental goal is to explore the scaling potential of OpenCL combined with an intelligent scheduler to balance between performance and power consumption.

I was hired as a consultant to help develop a computing science curriculum for the broad general education phase (~age 0 - 14) of the Scottish curriculum for excellence. During my time I was based in the University of Glasgow, but interacted with academics, civil servants, and teachers from both primary and secondary schools. The goal was to help develop a computing science curriculum which lays a solid foundation for pupils in terms of preparing them for either the world of work, or pursing the subject academically.

My thesis describes a new actor-based language and runtime which supports adaptation across the computing scale space from embedded systems to GPUs and multicore CPUs, as well as some tools to support design, development and testing.Thesis title: A Linguistic Approach to Concurrent, Distributed, and Adaptive Programming Across the Scale Space

I spent a couple of months working on the final aspect of my PhD: actor migration and discovery across heterogeneous hardware platforms.

Fellowship awarded by the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). The work is a short break from my Ph.D. studies to explore parallelisation of particle dispersion modelling with OpenCL, and extending the basic model to include radioactive decay, and particle deposition.This work was successful.

Taking 6 months out before starting my PhD to do a bit of traveling round the world. South America, South Eastern Asia, China, Japan, and getting the train back through Russia

This position saw the continuation of my work on embedded OS development.

In this internship, I was responsible for optimising the "telephone book" for the gloabl compute infrastructure that was (and is) used by CERN. This was necessary to enable the system to scale as the number of nodes attatched to the grid would increase in the future. The work was sucessful, seeing a 40% improvement over the previous approach.

During my fifth year I obtained a First Class masters degree in Computing Science. For my thesis i wrote a language-specific operating system, as well as taking classes in research techniques and digital image processing.

Here i was working on a real time scheduler for the Xen hypervisor to support the accurate emulation of a multitude of wireless sensor nodes. This came off the back of the creation of XenoContiki, a modified version of the Contiki kernel to work as a Xen domain.

During my time at Codeplay i worked on a wide and varied range of projects from code duplication checkers to internal language demanglers. I gained experience with bespoke profiling tools and the opportunity to work on some proprietary hardware.
