Science, technology and management are my drivers to find solutions for the challenges in applied genetics.It's these 3 elements being the cornerstones of my professional career: With a master in biotechnology and a PhD in medical sciences I converted my interest in science into a profession. I want to do things right and share my knowledge with others. Therefore I am proud to have contributed to a number of key papers setting the standards in the domain of qPCR (MIQE guidelines, qbase calculation framework) and being a frequent invited speaker on international conferences. A liking and skill for technology soon presented itself during my PhD. I introduced the tools that allowed me and my colleagues to identify the causal gene for 10 genetic disorders, 3 of which resulted in a Nature Genetics publication. In collaboration with prof Vandesompele I developed the qbase software for automated qPCR analyses. Though initially intended for internal use, it soon gained wide public interest and culminated in the foundation of a spin-off, Biogazelle. Being part of the Biogazelle management from the start-up in 2007 to a company of over 50 people in 2020, waring many different hats, I have seen all the aspects of managing a company - managing a team. I cherish the honest team spirit and enthusiastic drive that was nurtured in Biogazelle.Finding and developing a solution, that's what drives me. I believe it is important to build this on scientific expertise, both personal and held by strong team members. That solutions are best found through honest and open communication, by looking beyond the problem and always applying critical thinking.Finding solutions is what I do at Biogazelle, it's what we do for Biogazelle's clients.The areas I have been most active in lately are: biomarker discovery, the development and testing of custom assays (qPCR or dPCR) for clinical trials and diagnostic testing of SARS-CoV-2.
