Given the meteoric rise in the usefulness of sanctions as a foreign policy tool, sanctions policy-making is incredibly dynamic and challenging. Our office has a leading role in the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Program of Action with Iran, the progressive lifting of Executive Branch sanctions on Cuba, the continuation of sanctions on Russia, and the formulation of sanctions policies in new areas like cyber.

In the wake of the financial crisis and at the beginning of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, I advised the Ambassador on economic and financial regulatory issues, advocated for TTIP adoption with Members of Parliament and key government/business leaders, and appeared on expert panels in the City and around the UK, including appearing on Sky News, to explain U.S. international economic policy.

During my two years in the Office, we helped to formulate the first Presidential Decision Directive on Development in 40 years. It was a labor-intensive, policy-dense effort which yielded a comprehensive, forward-looking, evidence-based development policy for the United States. In addition, our office contributed our policy expertise to the creation of the first Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review, the primary means by which the State Department assesses its policy direction and budgetary needs every four years.

At the U.S. Mission to the European Union, my team forged a lasting regulatory cooperation relationship with the EU Commission, which included the creation of regular senior-level regulatory discussions, successes in regulatory harmonization where possible, and expert exchanges on health and safety issues.

Started the Maysan Province PRT. In the midst of frequent militia shelling and completely without a template, our tiny team worked 16/7 to create a functioning provincial reconstruction team which worked with the Maysani provincial government on budgeting, accountability mechanisms, voter outreach, and infrastructure plans.

Student at NDU with a concentration on media studies. Used run-up to Ukraine's Orange Revolution to illustrate power of media to deliver transparency and to promote free and fair elections in Ukraine and the wisdom of well-placed governance assistance. (Ten years previously, USAID had provided seed money to Ukrainian media outlets and to a nascent civil society movement.)

Led the Ukraine office in two years immediately prior to Ukraine's 2004 Orange Revolution, in which a pro-Western government was elected for the first time in free and fair elections. Created a strategy to leverage diplomatic reporting, outreach, suasion, collaboration with EU and OSCE partners, and working with diasporas in the U.S. and Canada, supported the peaceful transition of power in Ukraine.

Vastly improved cogency, content, and usefulness of G8 policy memoranda. Participated in beta testing for new State Department document review process. Wrote numerous economic policy speeches for Under Secretary for Economic Affairs and assisted in drafting public diplomacy texts for use by State Department principals.

Worked intensely with UK's Department for International Development (DFID) on providing assistance to displaced populations during the Balkans War. Was U.S. representative and deputy U.S. representative, respectively, in two international industry groups.

Negotiated (with USTR and State Department teams) regulatory and investment agreements with Japanese government. Backstopped UN officer.

Was part of team that started the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation group. Was U.S. representative to APEC working groups.

Did crisis reporting during Liberian Civil War. Was liaison between Charles Taylor's troops and USG in evacuation of hundreds of U.S. citizens from Liberia (with no casualties).

Responsible for economic sector reporting and was successful in ensuring Nigeria paid PL-480 and Exim arrears.
