Epidemiological researcher at the Environment and Health department of the RIVM. My projects focus on the impact of environmental exposures of different origins (air pollution, noise, vibrations) on human health. In addition, also involved in research on the spread of antimicrobial resilient pathogens within the environment.

Mastitis, an inflammation of the mammary gland, is a costly disease that is responsible for considerable economic losses in the dairy industry. Increased knowledge of pathogens responsible for mastitis will help to develop new strategies to prevent and treat mastitis. As a PhD researcher at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Utrecht University, my research focuses on the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and how this pathogen is capable of avoiding the host immune system during mastitisMy projects involve several different techniques and approaches, ranging from practical work in the lab to bioinformatic analysis of bacterial genomes. Besides my research, I am also involved in the supervision of students. As a PhD researcher, I developed and used the following skills on a daily basis-Bacterial and mammalian cell culture-Laboratory techniques (ELISA, qPCR)-Statistical data analysis with R and SPSS-Perform Bioinformatics analysis-Writing Scientific Publications -Supervising and teaching MSc and BSc students during research internships-Presented work at (inter)national meetings and seminars -Project management and team working

After my MSc, I started as a trainee at the European Chemicals Agency in Helsinki, Finland. This European Union Agency is responsible for the implementation of REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) and this policy addresses the production and use of chemical substances, and their potential impacts on both human health and the environmentAs a trainee, I worked on the development of an internal company wiki to assist in the evaluation of REACH dossiers. During this project, I worked close together with experts in several different fields of chemistry and toxicology in an international environment, and developed a wiki that made complex information easily accessible and understandable for all staff of ECHA.

My second research internship was performed at KWR Watercycle Research Institute, an independent water research institute covering the whole of the water cycle. At KWR, I investigated the prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in Dutch surface water and drinking water installations. My activities at KWR consisted out of designing and setting up a study-design, collect water-samples from installations and surface locations, isolating bacteria from water-samples and detecting resistance genes in these bacteria. Besides practical work, I wrote a report about my findings and presented this to the whole research staff of the institute

As part of MSc Toxicology and Environmental health, I performed a 9 months internship at the Veterinary Public Health Department of the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) in Utrecht. During my internship, I investigated antibiotic resistance in bacteria at pig farms, both in animals and in humans living and working on farms, During my internship, I collected samples from farms, performed DNA extraction and detected the prevalence of several resistance genes using PCR. Besides my practical work, I analysed my research results, wrote report and presented my data. Also, I was involved in the daily supervision of MBO technician student
