About Jhono Bennett

I am co-founded of 1to1 - Agency of Engagement, a design-led social enterprise in Johannesburg. Currently, I am a Unit Tutor at the Bartlett School of Architecture while pursuing a doctoral degree in the TACK network. My research interests include inclusive design, spatial justice, critical positionality, and urban planning in South African cities. Through 1to1 and my teaching and research work at FADA, I have collaborated with various South African government departments, local and international research institutes, and universities, including Harvard’s GSD, CEPT’s Faculty of Architecture, and the University of Sheffield's Urban Design program. I have received several awards in the last 15 years of design and research, including the Mail&Guardian Top 200 Young South Africans Award (Civic Sector), the Ashoka Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship, and the Mandela Washington Young African Leadership Initiative Fellowship. We even put together a full Gujarati 'hand over' booklet titled Dreaming with Mandvi Ni Pol, which was given to the leadership in our final engagement with the Pol. This tool proved to be effective in the collaboration between students from the University of Sheffield and the University of Johannesburg, facilitating remote co-design and resulting in more inclusive and contextually relevant design solutions. The tool also supported community involvement in grassroots urban development projects, allowing us to create more equitable and sustainable urban spaces that catered to the needs of all residents. By visualising and communicating complex spatial concepts in a more accessible manner, the projected mapping tool played a significant role in facilitating this process.
