In 2020 I took on a ‘seemingly impossible’ job to explore and search for next big, radically new revenue sources. Here is how we assessed the situation and opportunity. On average 80% of company assets/data are dark. Serving ~95 % of Fortune 1000 customers and a total of 230,000 total customers in 70 countries, Iron Mountain has one of the world’s largest amount of dark assets in custody. What if we ‘turn on the new digital switch' illuminating all the dark asset—physical document, box, equipment, media, video, audio, images, or bio samples—turning into new value, ultimately an Asset Monetization Marketplace. During a 3-month ‘Discovery Tour’ to take inventory of Iron Mountain’s assets, we hit a big Gold Mine—hundreds of millions of glass pathology slides in our temperature- and humidity-controlled vaults. With increasing dependence on lab tests for patient diagnoses and an ever-growing volume of slides, pathologists need fast turn-around time. This became an opportunity to help quickly convert physical pathology slides into digital images—a new Iron Mountain Digital Pathology On Demand (DPOD) platform to scan and deliver faster access to high-quality images by eliminating the wait for physical slide retrieval and delivery. They can search, annotate, analyze (using AI), and share images to facilitate collaboration. Also explored other asset monetization opportunities, including using NFT technology for media & art collection assets. More importantly responsible for the strategic growth of ABS business which was very much stagnant at <1% YoY growth. For years, it focused on PC/printer-device related accessory, supply, and support—very low revenue, low margins. Also highly fragmented as 80% of the end users were under $1M TCV (Total Contract Value) over 3-year period. So, how to create more larger, high margin deals which customers need and are willing to pay?Back in early 2010s most enterprises were overwhelmed by data. Drowning in a sea of data, they needed HP as a trusted partner to help turn data into insights. Launched HP HAVEn (Hadoop, Autonomy, Vertica, Enterprise Security, and n-apps), the industry’s first open, scalable, and secure Big Data full-stack platform to handle 100% of enterprise data—structured, unstructured, semi-structured—derive intelligence from that data in real-time—and turn analytics and insights into faster, better business decisions. As first customer, GE Aviation used HP HAVEn to analyze as much as 5GB/s data from 3,000+ sensors in its Turbo Engine and achieved 75% noise reduction and 16% better fuel efficiency. This pivot from product service to Data-centric, high-value, high-margin VALUE delivery led to a $1B new revenue (top accomplishment in HP 2013 10K).
