The catalyst has been commercialized.• Proposed the solvent or surfactant with a long n-alkyl chain can create diffusion-limited growth conditions to control the fractal nanostructures (Rh, and Pt-Ag alloy nanocrystals).• Demonstrated the transformation between cyclic penta-twinned and single-crystal nanostructures can be achieved by controlling the thermodynamical factors or the supersaturation of growth blocks.• Led the structure-dependent properties of as-prepared nanocrystals in electrocatalysis (methanol/formic acid/ethanol electrooxidation, HER/ORR, CO2 reduction), organocatalysis (styrene/phenol/nitrobenzene hydrogenation), thermocatalysis (CO oxidation, CO2 hydrogenation, syngas to ethanol) and photocatalysis.• Studied the electrocatalytic oxidation of the methanol/ ethanol process with in situ FT-IR.
