As a trained scientist Javier enjoys creative problem solving with the goal of accelerating the development of life science tools and technologies. During his career, Javier has been involved in primary research, project management, securing non-dilutive funds for a biotech company and in the development and launch of new products in the life sciences industry. Before his current role servicing the biotech industry, Javier obtained a PhD in Neuroscience at the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela and completed a postdoctoral position at the University of Manchester, where he worked in regenerative biology. Motivated by the need to develop better tools to ask key questions necessary for the early diagnosis of different diseases, Javier joined an R&D stage company developing tools to understand with added granularity the role of metabolism in several disease states. The ability to engage with end-users and other industry partners while applying emerging scientific concepts sparked his interest of working at the intersection of research and business.Currently, Javier continues to work as an independent consultant for biotech and academic institutions, leveraging his scientific background while supporting his clients business development needs.

Principal InvestigatorOroboros Instruments Gmbh Nov 2018 - Jan 2022InnsbruckAs a Principal Investigator, I was leading some work packages of our European grant (EIC-SMEInst-2018-2020 NextGen-O2k project), specifically those focused on technical developments, documentation and launching of our new flagship product. Our main aim was to extend the analytical and diagnostic power of high-resolution respirometry by the integration of NADH- and Q-redox monitoring in the NextGen-O2k. Also, we were willing to expand our business to the algal biotechnology and ecology fields with the development of the PhotoBiology module of the NextGen-O2k.Also, my role in the company involved the support in the development of new software, evaluation of grant applications, supervision of junior scientists, technical support to our clients, organization and participation as a tutor in training workshops and scientific meetings, customers relations and, in general terms, development and maintenance of the scientific company ecosystem. -
Senior Postdoctoral Research AssociateMedizinische Universität Innsbruck Aug 2018 - Nov 2018InnsbruckI worked at the Medizinische Universität Innsbruck in association with Oroboros Instruments during the last stages of the K-Regio MitoFit project. If you are interested in getting more information about the project please see: https://www.mitofit.org/index.php/K-Regio_MitoFit -
Postdoctoral Research AssociateThe University Of Manchester Apr 2015 - Jun 2018Manchester, United KingdomMy work was focused on the role played by the mitochondria during tissue regeneration and the early stages of embryonic development. During these years as a Postdoc, I made a novel discovery describing the mitochondrial reactive oxygen species as crucial in modulating key mechanisms involved in the cell cycle. Our findings demonstrated that mtROS is required for the cell division and that it oscillates with the different stages of the cell cycle (See Han et al. 2018). During the regeneration process, the tissues are remodeled to an embryonic state, which promotes the proliferation and differentiation of the required cells for wound healing. For this reason, my main interest is focused on describing and characterizing the role of the mitochondria during early development with the broader aim of bioengineering the tissue to promote a free scar wound healing. -
Research ScientistUniversity Santiago De Compostela Oct 2005 - Jul 2014My part-time PhD was focussed on the study of mitochondrial bioenergetics on Parkinson’s disease models. I applied high-resolution respirometry, TPP+ membrane potential electrodes and other techniques to characterize the alterations promoted by 6-OHDA and aluminium. Also, I analysed the levels of oxidative stress for models in vitro and in vivo. This work was supervised by Dr. Soto-Otero and Dr. Méndez-Álvarez. -
Research AssistantUniversidad De Santiago De Compostela Jun 2013 - Sep 2013Santiago De Compostela, SpainThe research for this position was funded by a grant entitled “Analysis of functional variations on mitochondrial respiration”. My duties and responsibilities were to evaluate molecular markers of the mitochondrial population (i.e. citrate synthase and cytochrome c oxidase), characterize the mitochondrial bioenergetics of knock-out mice and to assay the activity of complex IV of the electron transfer system. As a research assistant, I also supervised other peers and colleagues working in molecular and biochemical techniques (e.g. SDS-PAGE, immunoprecipitation and cellular fractionation) and advised them on their results and their relevance for the mitochondrial physiology. -
Research AssistantUniversidad De Santiago De Compostela Feb 2013 - May 2013Santiago De Compostela, SpainThe research for this position was funded by the grant entitled “Cerebral dissection, mitochondrial isolation and evaluation of oxygen consumption by high-resolution respirometry”. My duties and responsibilities were to characterize the bioenergetics of mitochondrial populations using high-resolution respirometry (Oroboros O2K) and to develop a theoretical model for the role of the angiotensin in aging and Parkinson’s disease (PD) (See Valenzuela et al., 2016). Furthermore, I worked with several biochemical techniques (e.g. TBARs, protein carbonyl content, thiol protein content and immunohistochemistry) in order to characterize oxidative stress levels and biochemical parameters of our model of PD. -
Research AssistantUniversidad De Santiago De Compostela Apr 2012 - Dec 2012Santiago De Compostela, SpainThe research for this position was funded by the grant entitled “Analysis of mitochondrial influence on dopaminergic neurodegeneration and mechanisms involved”. My duties and responsibilities were to analyse the response of mitochondria to different agonists and antagonists of angiotensin receptors using high-resolution respirometry and spectrophotometric techniques. Furthermore, I studied other parameters involved in a theoretical model for aging and PD, including ROS production, membrane potential and nitric oxide (NO•) production (See Valenzuela et al., 2016). -
Research AssistantUniversidad De Santiago De Compostela Jul 2010 - Oct 2010The research for this position was funded by the grant entitled “Aluminium as aetiology factor of Parkinson’s disease”. My duties and responsibilities were to analyse the response of mitochondria to different concentrations of aluminium using high-resolution respirometry and spectrophotometric techniques. We implemented the study with in vitro and in vivo models to describe the toxicity of aluminum via oxidative stress. During the development of the project I was responsible for the experimental design, the writing of publications and the evaluation of the experimental model (See Iglesias-Gonzalez et al. 2017) -
Short Research StageKing'S College London Jul 2009 - Sep 2009This short research project was focused on evaluating the ability of 6-hydroxydopamine to trigger cellular death at SH-SY5Y cultures. Also, I obtained experience in techniques of cellular cultures (e.g. SH-SY5Y and PC12), carrying out primary cultures (mainly striatum cultures from rat embryos) and immunohistochemistry techniques. In combination with some experiments performed in Santiago de Compostela this short research stage allowed us to establish and publish a comparison between the cellular and isolated mitochondria models (see Iglesias-Gonzalez et al., 2012). The research was supervised by Dr. Sarah Salvage and Prof. Peter Jenner. -
Research AssistantUniversidad De Santiago De Compostela Jan 2008 - Oct 2008The research for this position was funded by the grant entitled “A search for a new drug in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease: MAO-B inhibitor and protector against the effects induced by dopamine on mitochondria electron chain transport" (SAF2007-66114, Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and European Regional Development Fund, Spain). My duties and responsibilities were to develop protocols for mitochondrial isolation and respiration in order to analyse the effect of pharmacological treatments on the electron transport system (see Iglesias-Gonzalez et al., 2013).
