Since the establishment of the Urban Park Rangers in 1979, Rangers have assisted and educated New Yorkers and visitors across all five boroughs. Urban Parks Rangers patrol the City parks and facilities; provide educational and recreational services through programs, tours, field trips and events; enforce compliance with City park rules and regulations and health and sanitary codes during the Covid-19 pandemic; provide safety services to the public; respond to and perform wildlife rescues; and serve as dispatchers and communications operators. Field duties: I developed and taught natural history lessons on topics including birds, geology, trees, urban ecosystems, and the Lenape to NYC schools students. I created and led engaging and thought provoking place-based hikes, talks, workshops, and programs for the general public. I facilitated adventure based activities like canoeing, camping, hiking, compass use, and astronomy. A large portion of my duties were monitoring and rescuing injured or sick wildlife, especially migratory birds and raccoons. I performed foot, bike, and mobile patrols of parks daily and on task forces following storms.Office duties:I took the initiative to collaborate with outside organizations to create professional development opportunities. The Outdoor School program offers both day and overnight programs during the school year that incorporate environmental education, team building, and retreat-type activities. During this short term position, I was contracted to assist with the annual fund and friend raising Gala, Acorns to Oaks, and Giving Tuesday. Through an updated and expanded digital content strategy, I increased their awareness in the Philadelphia region and engaged new donors and partners. With experience in large black tie events, I helped host the Gala creating a smooth flow of attendees into the cocktail hour and silent auction, where the new unique donor items awaited. School year Teacher Naturalist:I led environmental lessons and activities in the outdoors to 3rd to 6th grade students while they stayed on property in cabins. I facilitated team building through the use of the group challenge course, low and high ropes course, and games. Evening activities included songs, skits, group games, night hikes, and campfires. Living and working on property meant sharing in daily chores including the husbandry of our donkeys, goats, and chickens, composting, meal facilitation, and School arrivals and departures.Summer Teen Adventure Leader:Teens too old for camp but too young to be a Counselor-in-Training were given the trusted opportunity to travel off property for twelve days of high adventure activities and tent camping. The experiences, from backcountry camping, rock climbing, white water rafting or using a map, were designed to challenge their comfort levels and build leadership skills.
