Adoption Specialist
My primary responsibility was developing potential adoptive families for special needs adoption children, and helping special needs adoption children prepare for joining a new forever family. Over the course of my time with AFO (which was originally called Christian Children's Homes of Tennessee) I added international adoption and private placement adoption, as well as general and special needs foster care to my experience. I was lucky to be trained and certified in the Parents As Tender Healers Curriculum, as well as being a trainer for specific programs for international adoptions agencies, and developing an interactive program for potential infant adoptive parents. My specialty was teenage girls, but I also worked with several sibling groups, and some challenging teenage boys.
After-School Programs Coordinator
I was hired by the Center for Community Outreach & Family Services to develop after school programs for at-risk children. We developed partnerships with Public Housing, the Families First Program (which is the TANF program in Tennessee), and the city Parks & Recreation department to be available to particularly at-risk children, but also remain open to any child whether or not they fit into traditional "risk" categories. My projects included DIGiLab (Drug Intervention Gives Independence) which used hands-on learning with technology and art to develop life skills such as problem-solving and confidence; Just for Girls, designed to foster strength and self-esteem among pre-teen and early teen girls; a Youth Advisory Board (with a focus on hands-on service and action for community development); as well as a lending library, computer lab, community clothing closet, and technology training for staff. That said, developing a Black History Month campaign for the entire Rec Center where we were based was one of my favorite projects (ask me about the Underground Railroad project). It should go without saying that developing relationships and fostering trust within a community that doesn't trust outsiders was key to our success.
