A select group of students and I brainstormed ways to incorporate health education, community involvement, along with Animal Allies. For the the health aspect of our project, we began configuring ways to create an Animal Allies’ Scholarship to help students train and register their pets as therapy animals. We did so by putting together a local fundraiser and contacting sponsors to help us promote. The fundraiser involved selling local artists material, with a portion of the proceeds going towards the scholarship, along with any donations given at the main event art showing. This being a brand new fundraiser and scholarship, it demanded multiple micro projects, willingness to learn new skills, spend extra hours, and outreach for potential collaboration.We connected with our University professor, a local art framing venue to host event, the Duluth Animal Allies coordinator, and Duluth artists to help guide us through press releases and expanding our promotion. We had weekly meetings I helped direct by creating agendas and meeting minutes. There we delegated who would take over certain portions of our weekly goals. I oversaw marketing the event by covering social media, putting up group designed posters amongst the community, researching and communicating to potentially interested sponsors, and contacting local news stations and publishers of our event. When I found sponsors, I planned in-person meetings with them to discuss more in detail of our project and why they should consider involvement. At the event, we organized food and drink, an artist station for people to purchase handcrafted pet names (proceeds for scholarship), and held raffle winnings for those who came (donations thanks to found sponsors). Local news stations came to record the event and I was lucky enough to be interviewed.The fundraiser was a great success, raising close to our fundraising goal. It trailblazed future opportunities to expand the scholarship.
