My second year placement is with the Juvenile Justice Division at the North Carolina Department of Public Safety where I am a Graduate Assistant. I am institutionalizing a statewide process for Juvenile Justice involved youth to be engaged in local Juvenile Justice Behavioral Health teams as required in HB593, Raise the Age legislation. I am collaborating with grass-top stakeholders, including Chief Court Justices, Local Management Entities – Managed Care Organizations, and the Juvenile Justice clinical leadership team, to develop a toolkit for youth to be engaged in the decision-making process. This includes one-on-one interviews and focus groups. Additionally, I am working with Youth Development Center clinical leadership team and managers to conduct and analyze a parent feedback survey for those who have kids in the YDCs. I’ll also be training the managers and court services on consensus building decision making. Lastly, I’ll be designing a program analysis to study the new program initiatives for older kids (16-18yrs old) who have joined the YDC due to the new Raise the Age law. Each of these activities are part of the statewide criminal justice reform initiatives within the Juvenile Justice Division.

At the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Social Work, I am a Student Ambassador representing the school and recruiting prospective students. In that role I have met individually with students, written four blog posts for the website, and attended two informational sessions. I am a member of the Carolina Social Workers Action for Voting and had a campaign interview on the website discussing ways to get involved with the elections and how to order a mail-in ballot. I am the 2020 Ellen Black Winston Award Scholar and the 2019 Janice Hough Schloper Scholar. I am a proud macro caucus member.

During my first-year research practicum at the Center for Child and Family Policy, Duke University, I participated in domestic and international research. I'm listed as the third author on the article, "Longitudinal Trajectories of Four Domains of Parenting in Relation to Adolescent Age and Puberty in Nine Countries" (Society for Research in Child Development, publication pending). As the Organizing Representative on the Beyond Coal campaign, I work to acheive our main objective, which is to replace dirty coal with clean energy by mobilizing grassroots activists in local communities to advocate for the retirement of old and outdated coal plants and to prevent new coal plants from being built.

I compiled constituent communication data using excel spreadsheets and graphs to develop a communication plan for the Senator Van Duyn. From this data, I produce a Facebook Live Series each week. I gather comments and questions from social media, phone calls, emails, and postcards to develop the topics for each week's video. I believe strengthening communication between politicians and communities will develop long lasting relationships and ultimately produce more effective legislation.

As a Community Engagement Fellow at United Way of the Greater Triangle (UWGT), I managed 35 portfolios of companies that host annual UWGT campaigns, averaging a total of $2 million. I worked with company leaders assisting with planning, implementation, and evaluation of employee fundraising goals. I tracked monetary results and conducted on-going follow-ups, serving as the primary contact. I kept up-to-date data records used for relationship building and developing strategic donor plans.• Work cooperatively with Campaign Leaders in Triangle companies in assisting with and managing the planning, marketing, implementation and evaluation of employee fundraising campaigns. UWGT is able to support our local community and make significant impact through these corporate fundraising efforts.• Track campaign results and conduct on-going follow-up with accounts• Attend a variety corporate events from employee breakfasts and lunches to dunk tanks and corn hole tournaments• Analyze past performance of assigned companies• Plan and implement strategies to improve account performance• Serve as primary contact between their accounts’ top management, campaign coordinators and United Way and maintain a positive relationship with each company• Conduct group presentations to employees about the impact of United Way

I'm an AmeriCorps VISTA at Brunswick Housing Opportunities, located in rural Bolivia, NC, and I am immersed in community development efforts. Now in my second year at BHO, I have worked to strengthen our partnerships with four community neighborhood coalitions (NHCs). The program provides facilitation, training, and fiscal support to grassroots organizations in Brunswick County; a rural county that is racially divided and unequally impoverished. NHCs promote citizen-led community development. I work directly with the NHCs to assist in developing needs assessment surveys and then complete analysis recommendations for all 4 NHCs. These surveys are designed with the strategy known as Asset Based Community Development (ABCD). This strategy not only engages communities, but helps to mobilize the micro-assets and brings out the power and strengths within communities to increase and create community development – whether that be social, political, or economic. Additionally, I have designed an 8 session training program on board development, financial regulation, and community planning. Through surveys and training, local community members are able to overcome their own challenges with their own assets, increasing and expanding their community development capacity. This promotes lasting impact so each Neighborhood Coalition can continue to work towards the goals and issues that face their community.

I personally developed a year-long grant calendar prioritizing time-sensitive assignments. Attended local municipality meetings represented the organization, answered questions that reflected their values and belief, advocated and communicated effectively with local organizations and state representatives.

Canvassed for The Fund for the Public Interest on the Environment Illinois and Illinois PIRG campaigns. Increased public education and political awareness through face-to-face interactions. I was a field manager, organized a team, raising momentum through positive encouragement and team building, while also independently communicated with a wide variety of constituents.

Non-profit Christian organization for the marginalized, poor, and homeless population. As a stipend summer intern working full-time, I organized programming for the summer Children’s Program; facilitated client access to services at the Social Service Center, such as showers, laundry, bus tokens and clothing vouchers; checked residents into the Homeless Shelter; and assisted in Poverty Simulations. While living in area neighborhood community housing with the other interns, my skills in teamwork and collaboration were enhanced.
